Auckland Students Benefiting From New Mobile Dental Unit

Students in Auckland are benefiting from a new mobile dental unit; the Mobile Smile Unit hit the city’s roads in January.

The brand new, state of the art unit is run by Lumino the Dentists, New Zealand’s largest dental provider; it is touring secondary schools in and around Auckland to provide free dental care as part of the government’s Oral Health Programme.

The Mobile Smile Unit has two separate surgeries, a waiting area and X-ray facilities, as well as music systems and a DVD player to keep patients entertained during their dental visit.

The unit tours around secondary schools, spending an average of 20 days at each school; if students require further treatment after their check-up, this can be arranged.

The new unit is now part of a team of three Lumino the Dentists dental vans serving the Auckland area.

Kerry Dunphy, marketing manager at Lumino the Dentists, said that the mobile services are helping to make dental care more accessible for more students. Currently, the uptake for free dental care is low among school children, with 30% of children eligible for free treatment not registered, and Lumino is hoping to change this around by bringing dentists to kids.

Lumino the Dentists has been bringing dental treatment to the North Shore for over a decade.
