A dental team from Andover proudly unveiled a new piece of life-saving equipment recently after purchasing a defibrillator over the festive period.

East Street Dental Practice has installed the defibrillator, which is open to use by the whole town, at its premises in the town centre opposite the Black Swan Yard. The automatic external defibrillator is within easy reach of local businesses and could help to save lives in the event of anyone falling ill suddenly in the coming years.

The bill for the £900 piece of equipment was covered by the practice, which now meets General Dental Council requirements. The requirements state that practices must have access to life-saving equipment.

The defibrillator is stored in a cabinet and local people calling in to report an emergency will be able to access it by using a code given to them by 999 call handlers.

Dr Paul Kenny, who has owned the practice for more than two decades, said that it was extremely positive both for the practice and the town to have such an important piece of equipment to hand. Although it is very rare for dental patients to suffer cardiac arrest, such incidents do occur and the team at East Street Dental Practice will be prepared and this is hugely important.

The cabinet to hold the defibrillator was funded by the dental community in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
