Whether it be cosmetic or medical, "dentists" is the eighth-most popular term that consumers search for in the Yellow Pages.

According to the Yellow Pages Association, dentists are searched for over 246 million times a year in the US, giving it a ranking of eight out of more than 4,000 possible search terms.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) found that the average patient spends $5,640 (£2,851) every year on various aesthetic treatments, with teeth whitening or bleaching named as the top procedures.

AACD director of marketing and public relations Eric Nelson stated: "The cosmetic dental boom shows no signs of slowing down. In a 2007 AACD survey, cosmetic dentistry-related revenue climbed to an average of $495,000 per practice."

The Yellow Pages study also revealed that 84 per cent of searches for dentists resulted in a purchase.

In the UK, 26 per cent of people claim to be too busy to book themselves an appointment with their dentist, a study by American Express Insurance Services has found.ADNFCR-1374-ID-18617279-ADNFCR
