American dental professionals are preparing to treat thousands of people this weekend (20th and 21st April), as Connecticut’s annual Mission of Mercy event comes to town. This year, the event will take place at Windham Middle School in Willimantic.

The Mission of Mercy is a charitable organisation, which was established to bring dental care to those who cannot afford to see a dentist or pay for dental insurance. Since its inception, millions of patients all over the US have benefited from free dental treatment.

The Willimantic clinic will open in the early hours of Saturday morning and run until Sunday evening, and organisers are expecting large crowds to turn out. Hundreds of dentists, dental nurses, dental hygienists and general volunteers will be giving up their time to staff the free clinic over the Easter weekend. Mission of Mercy events tend to be incredibly popular, and often, people start to turn up and join the line days before opening to secure a spot.

Over the course of the weekend, a giant team of volunteers will be working to treat thousands of patients with a range of dental ailments. Services that will be available on the day include cleaning treatments, routine checks, fillings and extractions. Appointments will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, and the organisers have urged people who want to see a dentist to arrive early.

On the day, 50 dental stations will be set up to create a giant, makeshift clinic within the school.
