A dental practice in Aberdeen has closed temporarily following an outbreak of Covid-19 cases.

The West End practice, which is located on Great Western Road, has shut in line with advice from NHS Grampian after a cluster of cases was linked to the surgery. An Incident Management Team (IMT) is now investigating the outbreak, which involves a “small number” of cases.

The practice has closed as a precautionary measure to protect members of staff and patients. Patients, dental workers and local residents have been advised to remain vigilant and to book a free test if they experience any symptoms. A spokesperson for the IMT confirmed that the practice had shut to protect the public and allow the team to investigate potential causes and sources of the outbreak.

Contact tracing is underway and anyone who may be at risk of developing symptoms or asymptomatic infection will be advised to isolate and take a test. Cases of Covid-19 have been rising across the UK in the last few weeks as a result of the emergence of a new variant first identified in India. Symptoms of Covid-19 include a persistent, new cough, loss of taste and/or smell and a high temperature.

News of the outbreak came as Edinburgh University professor Devi Sridhar warned that case numbers in the capital city had risen significantly in the last two weeks. Restrictions were eased a fortnight ago and people have been socialising more, which has contributed to a substantial rise in case numbers. Prof Sridhar said that case numbers in Edinburgh were “not looking great” amid a surge in visitor numbers and increased household mixing.
