A poll has revealed that most people believe that an attractive smile can help to improve the chance of happiness and success.

According to research carried out by Bupa, more than half of Brits believe that a nice smile has a positive impact on your social, personal and professional life. Three in five people think that having an unattractive smile can prevent a person from getting a good job or attracting a life partner, while 46 percent of people believe that a nice smile can get you far in terms of your career and personal life.

Despite the evidence to suggest that a healthy, attractive smile is important to most, the poll revealed that only 50 percent of people attended regular dental examinations, with 1 in 7 stating that they had not seen a dentist within the last four years and 4 percent of people admitting that they had never been to the dentist.

The poll also revealed that Kate Middleton has the perfect smile in the eyes of Brits, despite the increasing popularity of the Hollywood style, ultra-white smile.

The survey suggested that many people will go a long way to get the perfect smile. Of those polled, 1 in 7 said that they would give up sex for a year in exchange for a perfect smile and 1 in 5 said they would go without alcohol for 12 months if it meant they were able to flash a dazzling set of pearly whites.

Brian Franks, Clinical Director of the Dentistry at Bupa Health and Wellbeing, said that it was clear that being happy with your smile can have positive implications for different areas of your life, including your professional and personal lives. As the survey suggests that people are concerned with maintaining an attractive smile, it is surprising that such a large proportion of people forgo their annual dental visit.
