A Injection is Being Developed To Prevent Tooth Decay

Sample News Big

Scientists from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China are working on a vaccination that could prevent future tooth decay, offering some hope to preventing or reversing dental caries. The team that created it note that the vaccine is years away from clinical tests, but dental expects are looking forward to the treatment as a major development in the fight against tooth decay and tooth loss.

The vaccination works by creating a vaccine using proteins from the main bacteria that causes cavities, and fusing it with proteins from an E.coli bacteria strain and a third protein made from flagella proteins which allow the combination to move around and prevent tooth decay with less side effects.

Administered to lab rodents as a nasal spray, the vaccine reversed tooth decay by over half and had a 64% effectiveness at cleaning teeth.

While some dental experts are heralding this breakthrough in a study that has been looked at for a long time, a spokesperson for the BDA noted that we are a long way away from a miracle cure for the effects of a sugary diet, and that currently it is best to avoid a high sugar diet in order to avoid tooth decay.
