An 83-year old dental technician from Hull is finally retiring after 68 years in the job.

Eric Fisher, the owner of E W Fisher Dental Laboratory in Beverley Road, has decided to down tools and take a break after spending nearly 70 years creating and repairing dental appliances.

Mr Fisher, from Cavendish Square, worked as a dental technician in Beverley and Hull before opening his own laboratory in 1984, which specialises in making and repairing dentures.

The 83-year old father of five is keeping the business in the family, and will be handing over control to his grandson, Dominic and fellow dental technician, Martin Collins.

Talking about his career, Eric said that he started work in 1951, earning just £1 a week. He undertook national service between 1955 and 1957, but has otherwise been devoted to his work as a dental technician. Eric’s grandfather and uncle were dentists, and he took an interest from an early age. When a role cropped up in Beverley, he was encouraged to apply by his mother, and he has never looked back.

Eric has always worked extremely hard, and he is still working 6 days a week in the run-up to his retirement, which he will take at the end of June. Eric has been devoted to building the business, and has worked tirelessly despite having triple bypass surgery and undergoing treatment for melanoma. After having surgery to reconstruct his face two years ago, Eric returned to work just one week later.

When he retires, Eric is looking forward to playing chess more frequently, and he’s also keen to indulge his other hobby, which is painting. He has already said that he’ll be popping in to check on the team too.
