The Colorado Dental Association is organising a dental event to celebrate Give Kids a Smile Day, which will take place on February 4th.

Give Kids a Smile Day is a national event, which promotes good oral health for children; dentists and dental staff all over the USA give up their time and offer their services free of charge to provide treatment for children in their local area.

The Colorado Dental Association is currently coordinating more than 500 members of dental staff across the state, in order to provide free dental care for around 4,000 children. Organisers of the event are expecting a large turnout for the event, which will be celebrated at dental centres and offices all over the state.

Dentists host the event to try and reach out to children who do not have dental insurance; many children do not attend regular check-ups and as a result, they suffer from decay and other oral health problems. Tooth decay is the most common preventable illness amongst children; going to the dentist on a regular basis and brushing the teeth twice a day every day will help to reduce the risk of decay, but many parents are struggling to afford the cost of dental care and consequently, many children are going for months, even years, without seeing their dentist.

The Give Kids a Smile Day event also gives dentists the opportunity to talk to parents and children about oral hygiene and many give out free toothbrushes and toothpaste, along with information packs about cleaning the teeth and healthy eating.
