3M will donate chairside scanners to dental schools across the USA, it has been announced.

The scanners will be provided by 3M Community Giving, a fund which donates money to projects and organisations to support education and make communities across the country stronger and more united.

The company will donate the chairside scanners, which enable dental schools to offer hands-on training; scanners will be given out to selected dental schools throughout the course of the year and by the end of 2011 schools will be offering training with the Lava Chairside Oral Scanner.

In addition to the scanner, 3M’s dental division, 3M ESPE will also provide technical support.

Schools must fit a number of criteria in order to qualify for the donation; this will include student numbers, proximity to 3M facilities and the ability to prove inclusion and integration of digital dentistry into the course programmes.
