Treatment for this type of condition very much depends on the cause. There are numerous causes from genetically short upper lip, excessive lip travel when you smile, excessive growth of your gums or overgrowth of your jaw. If the wrong treatment is undertaken then it gives a very unpleasing result which by your description sounds like you already have.
I would suggest a consultation with a cosmetic gum specialist so that they may assess the problem for you

How did you get on with Peter? he is one of few guys in the UK that offers the hypermobile lip repositioning surgery treatment that lowers the upper lip reducing the appearance of your gummy smile. Sometime botox is required before the procedure in order to relax the muscles during the healing process.
