It very much depends on the philosophy of the treating dentist, however the sooner the better. I try to ensure that the fixed retainers are put in at the same time that the braces are taken off. I know other dentists who do not do this and have success with their methods

    I hope this helps

    Default Retainers

    Dr Pav,

Thank you for responding to my query.

My Dentist has given me removable retainers which i have to wear 24/7 because when am not wearing it my uppr front teeth gap opens.

His reason for not fitting it is because he said my gums are inflamed they need to calm down before he can shave them off. is this valid reason.

Also if i have a small gap between my 2 front teeth can fixed retainers still be fitted.

    Thank you.

    Hi Ruth,

It sounds like your dentist is looking after your best interest. I would express concerns about the gap before they fit the retainer

    I hope this helps

Ideally the fixed retainer should be fitted the same day as the braces
are removed (or the day that you stop using the appliance if it is
    removable)

Impressions can also be taken for a removable retainer- The 'belt and
braces' approach to retention. This removable retainer is worn at night
(as well as the permanent fixed retainer) for the first 3 months and
then kept in case of a problem with the fixed retainer
