I have cercon (which I think is similar). The dentist did say that if the teeth were discoloured I might need to go for another type. Luckily mine aren't black or anything. In terms of fit, they are a vast improvement on the crowns I had before and have improved the state of my gums. Margins are now very healthy.

Marginal fit is not determined by material, but skill of dentist and technician. Cercon is not similar to Lava but is a good material

I thought they were both based on zirconia. What is the difference between them?

Zirconium and alumina cores are all milled by cad cam technology. They can be an excellent fit but the preparation must be perfect. If there are any sharp internal edges the computer cannot read these areas.
I have seen some very poor fitting computer milled crowns and cores. And some perfect ones also. Again it is very much down to technique of preparation and skill of technician.
Bonding to zirconium based materials is also extremely difficult. In fact, current evidence shows us that these restorations cannot be bonded but can only be cemented. The difference being that bonding in a restoration is a chemical link between tooth and crown, whereas cementation is simply luting the space without chemical adhesion.
Both modes of action have their place. If a restoration is cemented in place, it must have good mechanical factors helping it stay in place. This is why I always say its not as easy at it looks and skill are extremely important. This is the reason I only use world class technicianswww.migrainecare.co.uk
