Will My Braces Need To Be Removed Prior To My Surgery?

Q.
Hi, Andrew, I’ve just had the Damon braces fitted and I am due to have an operation soon which I’m being put to sleep for and staying in hospital for one night. My question is, will the hospital still do my operation with the braces on? If not, will my orthodontist remove them prior to having the operation then put them back on after it? I’m really worried about this and would be grateful if you could help me as I hope I can still have the operation and not have to wait until I have finished my full treatment with the braces as I could have them on a year or more. Thank you.

Hello and thank you for writing in. I don’t really know for sure but normally the braces will stay on, check with your surgeon. I would imagine that the braces would only be a problem during surgery if you’re having surgery on your jaw/mouth and I’m unsure as to whether this is the case. I hope this goes well for you. Best wishes, Dr Andrew Moore.
