Will I Have A Scar On My Face If I Get Jaw Alignment Surgery?

Q.
Hi, I am 17 and I have recently been to see the orthodontist about getting braces (After being on the waiting list for quiet a while). I have really poorly shaped teeth, and you can’t see my bottom teeth because of my top teeth (I think this is called an overbite, I’m not too sure). The orthodontist recommended that I have surgery to bring my bottom jaw forward, would I be able to get this free or would I have to pay for my surgery? Please could you tell me a little bit about it, and would I have a visible scar on my face if I went through with the operation? Thank you.
A.
Hello and thank you for your question. As you are only 17, I presume that your orthodontic consultation and treatment will be on the NHS. If so then all your treatment should be covered, including any potential surgery. Usually what happens in cases like yours is that the teeth are first aligned using fixed braces. Once appropriately aligned, surgery is carried out on one or both jaws to reposition them and establish the ideal relationship.
All of the surgery is carried out within the mouth and so there is no visible scaring after the surgery. After the surgery, the new jaw position is held in place using small plates. This type of surgery is very effective and the results can be very dramatic.

I hope this answers your question and I wish you the very best of luck with your treatment. Kind regards, Marcus Gambroudes.
