What should I do about my crooked teeth and fear of dentist?

Q.
Hi I am 17 years old and have got a real fear of the dentist and I have crooked teeth and really want them fixed I have got a quite bad gaging reflex I havnt smiled in a couple of years because of this I was just wondering what to and what to ask a dentist if I go ?
A.
Dear Enquirer,
The first thing to do is to find a dentist who you can talk to openly aboout your fears and make sure you feel 100% comfortable with them. They will discuss all the different treatments you may be suitable for and help you with your fear. Some dentists offer hypnosis as a service to calm you down before treatment or you can have sedation so you are calm during your visits. I normally do not have to resort to these methods and a little TLC goes a long way in helping my patients accept treatment with relative ease.
