Q. What is gum disease and what treatment can you have if you have gum disease

A. Gum disease usually refers to a problems with the supporting tissues that hold the teeth into the jawbone. Gingivitis refers to the upper level only Periodontal diseases result in loss of the attachment & bone around the tooth.
Basically you have to have bacteria/germs/bugs to cause the problem so the treatment involves thorough cleaning, removal of anything that hinders cleaning.
