What can I do to prevent plaque build-up on teeth with periodontal conditions?

Q.
I am 69 years old and have quite severe gum disease. I brush my teeth twice daily and floss before going to bed every night. I go to the dentist every six months but can’t prevent plaque building up. It’s getting to the point where my lower teeth will have to be removed. Can I do anything to save them at this stage?
A.
Dear Enquirer,
The degree of bone loss wll indicate how severe your gum disease is. If your teeth are moving substantially and your xrays show substantial bone loss, then you may need to have these removed. Often these teeth are not painful, it just becomes uncomfortable for you to bite hard things. Please talk to your dentist about this and what they plan to do once your teeth are removed.

Sunita
