What anaesthetic options are available for fillings, specifically root canals?

Q. I have an extremely sensitive rear molar that needs a filling. The last time two lots of injections didn’t deaden the pain during the drilling. What else can be done to reduce pain? If I need a root canal on this, can I not be knocked out so I don’t feel a think until I wake up?,
A. Dear Enquirer, Don’t worry, sometimes it can be more difficult to numb up the lower back teeth compared to the top teeth. If you have an abscess on the tooth then this is made worse and it is difficult to get the area completely numb. However, if you require root canal you will need to go back to your dentist as soon as possible. You may require antibiotics which will settle any infection and then it will be easy to numb you up. You do not need to be knocked out for a standard root canal procedure. I hope this helps, Sunita
