An X-ray Showed My Wisdom Tooth Inclining. It’s Starting To Hurt. Is There Anything That Can Be Other Than Extracting It?

Friday, May 2nd, 2014
Q.

Hi Andrew. I’ve got wisdom tooth in below right jaw
and it is hurting a lot. On X-ray it showed it is becoming inclined and it is touching the teeth either side. My dentist says I should go for surgery and remove the wisdom tooth since it is inclined and can cause harm to next teeth. Should I go for surgery and remove it or should I wait for some time for pain to go?  I am scared of surgery so I’m wondering if there is any possibility of avoiding it? Also, I’d like to know if the wisdom tooth will keep pushing and hurting in future?

Thank you.

My Bridges Are Deteriorating And My Choices Are Dental Implants Or Plastic Dentures. What Would You Suggests?

Friday, November 29th, 2013
Q.

I have had a number of consultations with my local dentist, due to the deterioration in the teeth that are supporting two bridges (which I’ve had for about 20 years) on the upper left and right side of my mouth. The choices are plastic dentures or dental implants. To me implants are the only choice. My dentist would refer me to a private clinic, but I am keen to get as good impartial advice/consultation as possible. There is some sensitivity under my bridges and I don’t want to see further deterioration. I am very concerned about the cost as well, and if payment plans are possible, as my dentist is quoting £2000 per implant. Could you advise me? Would you offer a consultation? Many thanks.

The Treatment My Dentist Has Recommended Is To Put A Bridge In. Is This Right In Your Opinion?

Wednesday, November 6th, 2013
Q.

Hi Dr Shaffie. I had a severe pain in my left jaw. The dentist I visited said I have infection on tooth #19. He gave me antibiotics to take for a week. The pain is getting better but not completely gone. The treatment plan he proposed is to extract the teeth and put the bridge in. Would you say this is a good option? If so, does the bridge treatment have to take place immediately or can I wait for a month? What other options do I have available to me? I do not have any insurance to cover and I want to know if this process of bridging can be delayed? Thank you, I’ll await your advice on this matter.

My Teeth Are Decaying For Some Reason And I Want To Know How Much It Will Cost To Fix Them As My Smile Says Who I Am?

Friday, October 25th, 2013
Q.

Yes, I was wanting to know how much it would cost me to have all eight of my teeth implanted along with four of my smaller teeth towards the front and to have them straightened. My teeth are decaying for some reason and are becoming uneven and it is making my used to be beautiful smile, ugly. That’s why I want to know or an around about price to how much it would cost? My smile is everything at my job as I work retail, so please help me get my beautiful smile back. If I don’t have that I don’t feel whole because my smile says who I am. I really hope you can help me sort this out.

I Am Currently Suffering From Some Bone Loss, Does This Mean I Will Need Dentures As I Am 60 Years Of Age?

Friday, October 11th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Shaffie, My question concerns my top jaw which is made up mainly of crowns and bridges that have been in added at different times over the last 20 years or so, and my dentist has told me there is getting to be a big gap between the crowns and the bone of my jaw under my gums. The bone is wearing away which seems to be the problem causing the gap. Does this mean I will have to have dentures or can something be done about this? I am now 60 years of age.  Thanks, I hope you can help me with my request in due time.

Should I Get An X-ray Check For My Chipped Teeth?

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes, I had a fall yesterday and chipped the bottom of two of my front teeth. About one quarter of each tooth is chipped off. I went to see my dentist immediately and she told me that no nerves are exposed, and to wait for about five days for the teeth to heal before doing the filling. My teeth only hurt if they are tapped, and then it feels sensitive and quite sore. I asked if an X-ray is needed, and my dentist said no. In the meantime, she gave me painkillers. I would like a second opinion. Is she right that I should wait a couple of days to do the filling and not immediately? I would be very grateful to have your advice, thanks so much!

Lack of explanation of intense pain in tooth with root canal

Thursday, February 14th, 2013
Q.

I had a root canal on tooth #19 about a month ago. I was fine after the procedure. A week later, I went in to get the crown fitting and a post placed. I had intense pain after that was done and 5 days later, I couldn’t feel the left part of my chin and the three teeth next to the one with the root canal felt crowded and tight. I went back to the dentist and he said he had no idea why I was experiencing numbing since they had not done any surgery and therefore, it was unlikely that my nerve had been damaged. He put me on antibiotics and steroids, but it is now it’s now 2 weeks later and the numbness and tightness is still there. The dentist is doing a “wait and see” approach and I am not sure if I should go somewhere else. Could there be more harm in waiting for the numbness to go away? Or is it possible that the nerve just needs time to heal? Please advise me!

Can you explain the flashes of pain I am getting in my tooth?

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011
Q.

Can mild tooth clenching cause gum swelling?
I’m 50, have a lot of fillings, and suddenly started having flashes of pain in a lower back tooth (6th from the front) with heat esp but also cold and sugar. It’s had fillings before. It got bad but the day before I saw a dentist it gradually went away. The dentist X-rayed it and found nothing wrong at all. Then it started up again. The pain seemed to echo in the top tooth and along my lower jaw. The next dentist likewise found nothing wrong on an X-ray, and no extra pain when he pressed the gum next to the root, but found a small piece of apple skin and removed it and told me to drip an antibacterial mouth wash into the gum/tooth lining with my tooth brush. The flashing pain cleared up but the tooth remained sensitive. Now there is swelling of the gum below the tooth low down at the jaw line and a little more pain than usual. I noticed when I relax to sleep I snug my lower jaw into my upper jaw firmly, and that the first point of contact is on that tooth. I think this was since some dental work done a year ago. Could this be the cause of the pain? Thank you for your time.

Could my wisdom tooth be impacted?

Friday, March 18th, 2011
Q.

Hi,
3 of my wisdom teeth have come out. They haven’t cause me problems, apart from they are all facing the gum outwards (just slightly), but are fine.
But recently my last wisdom tooth has started coming up.
It has broken the skin. But only on one side, and now there is a gap between the wisdom tooth and the other tooth. Does this mean the wisdom tooth is impacted?
