My Wisdom Teeth are Causing a Lot of Pain. What Can I Do?

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014
Q.

Hello,

A few months ago, I went to the dentist as my wisdom teeth were causing a lot of pain. They took x-rays and found out that all four of my wisdom teeth were growing wonky and into the teeth in front. They said as the teeth have not yet broken the gums, there is not anything they can do yet.

Recently, my wisdom teeth have become painful again and is very uncomfortable. I have also notice a gap appearing between my two front teeth which is causing the skin inside my mouth to become sore as it keeps getting caught in the gap and is making sores in my mouth. I don’t know what to do as it is very painful but I do not want to go back to that dentist as they have said they won’t do anything.

Please can you let me know what can be done as I am worried the gap is just going to get bigger and my wisdom teeth more painful.

Thank you.

Will My Smoking Cause My Infection To Swell Further?

Friday, February 7th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Moore, I really hope you can help. I’m 19 years old and have my wisdom teeth coming through, I have had my bottom left one already come through, it caused a little bit of pain but now it is fully through now.
My bottom right one is coming now and has become infected, causing a swelling around my cheek and gum, I had it drained quite a bit yesterday by the dentist and it’s now more comfortable. I am a smoker so will smoking cause more swelling? Or will it infect it further? Thanks, I hope you can offer me some advice on this.

My Wisdom Teeth Are Forcing My Teeth Out Of Shape. Should I Have Them Removed?

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014
Q.

Dear Dr Hughes, I’m 19 years old, and I’ve had braces when I was 11 years old up until I was about 13. Now my wisdom teeth are coming through and my teeth are being forced together and slightly starting to form out of line and shape, which is making me rather paranoid, I’d love to get a brace or something that can re-line my teeth again but am unsure about how I go about this? Also do you advise waiting for the wisdom teeth to come through fully or seek to get them removed, as you can imagine I’m in a load of pain and can’t cope much longer!

Kind Regards.

My Wisdom Tooth Hurts Really Bad But I’m Not Sure I Should Take A Painkiller As It May Cause Addiction. What Should I Do?

Tuesday, January 21st, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr. Mark,

I am having some problems with my lower right wisdom tooth. It hurts really bad, but I also don’t want it to be extracted as I am working at the moment and I cannot take some days off – I am sure I will have to stay at home at least one week after the operation – so I bought a pain killer: Ibuprofen and Codeine (200mg / 12.8 mg tablets). In the description it says that I cannot take it more than 3 days (2 at a time and three times a day) as it might cause addiction. Should I still use it? I would appreciate your help. Regards.

I’ve Had Severe Pain In My Wisdom Tooth For Three Days But My Dentist’s Isn’t Open. What Can I Do?

Monday, December 2nd, 2013
Q.

I don’t know what to do Dr Hughes. I have had a severe pain in my wisdom tooth for 3 days now, it is making it very hard to get to sleep and its now keeping me awake at night. It’s more painful when trying to eat or drink anything and when eating my tooth keeps breaking away. I have tried painkillers and there not touching the pain. I noticed today that my tooth is growing through the gum but is breaking once it comes through the gum, Half of the tooth is missing and the other half still remains in the gum. I’m in agony and it’s giving me pain all the way down the right side of my face and teeth. What can I do as my dentist isn’t open?

I’m Looking Into Getting Braces For My Top And Bottom Teeth. What Financial Options Can I Obtain To Achieve This?

Monday, November 4th, 2013
Q.

I’m looking into getting braces for my top and bottom sets of teeth. It’s something that I have been thinking about for a couple of years now and feel it will help me feel better in myself. The bottom set are the worst out of the pair due to my wisdom teeth coming through and pushing teeth out of position which has caused me a lot of pain in the past. I am on a low wage at the moment and would like my teeth fixed, is there any way to get them fixed through a finance plan? For example, pay monthly with no interest rate or any other ways, and also could you tell me if there is any highly rated dentists in the Nottingham/Derby area? Thanks.

My wisdom tooth is causing me terrible pain, does it need to be removed?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012
Q.

hello doctor moore. i am 28 years old and i used to feel pain occasionally at the back of the gum where the wisdom teeth grows . and the problems is that i’m still feeling the pain even at this age. i have 28 teeth currently. and it has now been confirmed that the wisdom tooth on the lower left jaw is growing horizontally and pushing the immediate molar tooth. and i am feeling terrible pain all the time. what should be the next course of action for me? would it be appropriate to remove the healthy neighboring pushed tooth so that the wisdom tooth will have space to grow through horizontally or does the wisdom tooth itself have to be removed? thank you for your time doctor

I have painful wisdom teeth but am afraid of the dentist. What can I do?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

Hi there I have a wisdom tooth coming in and it has always been a LITTLE painful, like a dull pain and I thought nothing of it, Iv had this light, dull pain for a year or more but recently (the last week) it has been getting sorer and sorer and now Ive booked-in to see my dentist on Friday 22nd April. I brush frequently, always make DOUBLY sure to brush my coming-in wisdom teeth as much as I can and use mouth wash and do the odd flossing in a week. I have a fear of the dentist because I have a fear of needles so this is why I take SUCH good care of my teeth. I am 20 and only have 1 filling which I got as a child and some white plasticy coatings in the grooves of most of my molars that my uncle gave me as he is a dental hygienist.
The gum around my painful Wisdom tooth is VERY red and swollen and the pain can be too much to handle, Ive been taking Anadin to cope with the pain better but even the rubbing of my tongue when I swallow or talk or eat is painful as it rubs the swollen bit of gum.
Ive set myself up for getting it removed but I am VERY scared of needles in my mouth and just thinking about it makes me cry LOL Im just wondering if theyd still use General Anaesthetic with me? Im in Scotland.
Thanks

Is there any way I could not have my wisdom teeth extracted?

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011
Q.

I’m asking this question as I’m concerned about one of my wisdom teeth. I’m aware they’re slightly impacted, not much on that note though. Though the main concern is the fact that my gums seem to be getting in the way and are getting chewed upon by the wisdom teeth. I’m simply wondering, is this perhaps due to the gum swelling up due to the recent erruption of the wisdom teeth or is it just my teeth being too crowded.

The easy option would be having the wisdom tooth pulled more than likely, but that seems a bit drastic for something that might just be swollen gums or an infection.

Thanks in advance for any reply,
Sean Swinzly.

Do you think I need root canal treatment or should I just have the wisdom tooth extracted?

Saturday, December 4th, 2010
Q.

I had a wisdom tooth drilled two months ago for a small cavity (composite filling). The tooth has been sensitive to cold, heat, touch, sometimes just aches. About a week ago….I was much better without those symptoms but this week the pain has returned. Should I give this more time or does this look like a root canal, extraction? Are there other options besides RC and extraction?
