How Long Does it Take to Recover from An Apicectomy?

Friday, July 22nd, 2016
Q.

I had an apicectomy done in February of last year. My mouth is still swollen and numb. How long does it take before the swelling actually goes away? My lip always feels like I have a fat lip. Some days are worse than others, it effects my speech. If it stays inflamed is there something over the counter I can take to help with the swelling? It still hurts on most days, I can’t eat on that side at all. I had this surgery in February 2015.

I Have Severe Toothache and Swelling Behind the Teeth. What Should I Do?

Wednesday, November 5th, 2014
Q.

Hi there Dr Hughes. I’m wondering if you can help me with the problem I am currently facing. At the moment, my central incisor and lateral incisor are really painful. I can feel the pain throughout my whole mouth, it’s that bad. I even have a bit of swelling behind my central and lateral teeth. Please tell me what I should do to prevent this pain, and is it something serious? I have been experiencing the pain for the past three days but today is the worst of all. Thank you.

I Had A Tooth Snap Off Weeks Ago. When I’ve Finished With The Antibiotics Do I Go To My Dentist Or The Hospital?

Wednesday, May 14th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I had an upper right tooth snap off several weeks ago. It caused me no pain at the time, however in the last few days it has and is causing me serious pain and extreme facial swelling. My GP has prescribed antibiotics but the pain remains regardless. What can I take to try to relieve it? When I have finished the antibiotics do I go to a dentist or hospital? There are still remnants of the tooth in the gum but the pain is awful. I have very little funds and need to know where to turn. Thank you for your reply in advance.

I Am Worried The Swelling Near My Tooth Is Affecting My Swallowing. Does It Need To Be Drained?

Monday, March 3rd, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. After fracturing my tooth, I had root canal treatment recently. I still have severe pain around the tooth and swelling of my jaw, under my neck and difficulty in swallowing. I am on antibiotics, amoxycillin and metronidazole. I am requiring frequent painkillers [nuramol and codeine and paracetamol]. If I have a dental cyst/collection of pus, does this need to be drained or will the antibiotics remove the pus cells?
The swelling is large and painful and I am worried that the swelling will make swallowing and possibly breathing difficult.
Thank you for taking the time.

Hi, I Have A Crack In My Tooth Which Has Had A Filling Put On It. I Still Think My Gum Is Infected. Should I Get A Second Opinion Or Wait Till It Heals?

Wednesday, February 12th, 2014
Q.

Hi, I emailed you regarding an infection I had in my gum. I have now realised that the problem I was having was due to a crack in my tooth. The crack was located on my upper front tooth near the gum. The tooth was sensitive to hot and cold temperature, there was pressure in the tooth and there was swelling of the gum. I was taking antibiotics from the doctor but the gum is still swollen slightly. It used to get irritated but the irritation has gone. I went to see my dentist who filled it with a filling. She didn’t seem to know much about cracked teeth. I had this done today and when I had it the pressure seemed to have reduced but as I’m putting pressure on that tooth, the pressure is still there but less than before. I was thinking that the gum needs time to heal because as the tooth was cracked and food was getting inside the gum causing an infection, it didn’t get a chance to heal. Could this mean the pulp is damaged? Should I wait for it to heal or get a second opinion? Thanks.

I Have An Abscess With No Pain But It Won’t Go Away. Should I Have Root Canal Treatment?

Monday, December 23rd, 2013
Q.

I have an abscess on my upper right teeth no. 6. but there is no pain. I wear braces too. I went to a dentist not for a check up last time because there was a swelling on my cheek already but she said it was normal everything is fine because I wear braces. The next day the swelling got worse and was affecting the right side of my face. I went back to the clinic but to another dentist. She said I have an abscess and prescribed Coamoxiclav 1g and Diclofenac and told me to come back after 5 days for RCT. The swelling on my face subsided but the abscess was still there. I went back after 5 days but she didn’t perform RCT because there was no pain. She just pricked the abscess with a needle and prescribed again another Coamoxiclav 1g and Flagyl. She said if there’s pain after, that she will have to extract it. Now the abscess has still not gone and there is still no pain. I didn’t take Coamoxiclav again. I think I might suffer from an overdose if I did. Also I asked her if she would change the filling of my other tooth because it’s too thin already( 8years) but she just won’t unless it hurts. Was she right? Please help. I don’t want to lose my teeth.

I Have Swelling Under My Jawbone And Some Toothache When I Lie Down, What Could This Be?

Monday, September 30th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Marcus, I have a toothache on my right side coming from one of the lower back teeth (I’m sorry, I don’t know the proper name) and there is a little swelling underneath my jaw bone on the same side. I believe I had the same problem a few months ago but without the swelling, and the pain went away by itself. It feels like the pain tends to get more intense when I’m lying down or when I stand up from lying down, I was really hoping you could help me try and diagnose this problem?

Why does my tooth keep rising, 18 months after a root canal?

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011
Q.

I have a molar ( #19) that had a root canal 18 months ago. The tooth continues to rise slightly in the socket, and my dentist has to grind the crown down slightly twice. I do wear a splint at night on the upper teeth. I do not feel any pain in the tooth, but as it continues to rise it meets the upper teeth and begins to become tender in the root area. My question is why does the tooth continue to rise, and will it stop rising?

What causes severe pain and swelling following a wisdom tooth extraction?

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010
Q.

Hello Doctor,

Please help me. I had two lower wisdom teeth extracted on Friday 19th of Nov. Surgery went well under general anesthesia.

Bleeding stopped second day and a severe pain started on third or fourth day. Swelling was really bad especially on the left side which has now gone down.

I still have persistent sharp excruciating pain on the left side, it runs through the jaw and merges into the chin., i can feel a vibration in my temple and its really bad.

I went to hospital for a check up today at Eastman Dental, the dentist said it ‘could’ be an infection, she eliminated possibility of dry socket as she said that would not respond to pain killers, I am taking 2 mandanol 500 g to relieve pain.it gets better for a few hours.

She did not take any xrays and said because i could feel pain when she ‘poked’ at the site it was a good sign.

I have been prescribed Amoxicillin 500 mg for five days,

I am still worried as i have to teach in college and i can barely talk longer than five minutes, i have been off work for ten days now so this whole thing is really affecting me pretty badly.

DO you think i could still have a dry socket, and are these pains due to infection? I was given antibiotics at the start for five days, how did infection still develop, i have been keeping the site clean.

Please help, all i need to know if the diagnosis was alright or should I worry, I am due to travel in a few days.
