My teeth hurt after root canal, is this indicative of a problem?

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011
Q.

HI

I had root canal treatment yesterday, and whilst the treatment went well i have a temperary filling and crown and need to have it finished next week. This is because my dentist said the roots are very long, she actually shown me the Xray and they practically come to the bottom of my jaw line. So more prep is needed.

Now to my concern: after the treatment everything was fine with no pain, however this moring i have woke up with quite a sensitive tooth, it’s not painful in general, just when i bite down. Is this normal, And can having such long roots cause more serious problems in the future? My dentist seemed quite….not concerned but well a little bemused!! Don’t get me wrong i like my dentist she is very patient with me as im a very nervous patient, i would just like a specialist opinion.

Is there a problem with my onlay? should I get a second opinion?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
Q.

Hi – I had an onlay fitted last June and it has been sensitive to cold (especially) ever since and there has been no improvement. I went back to my dentist in July and said it felt like there was a gap in the join as I felt sensitivity down to the root. He gave me a flouride toothpaste but this did not help. I went back in Sep last year for a second opinion after making a complaint. I was told by the senior dentist that she couldn’t find any gaps and that given time the sensitivity would go away and to come back in 6 months. She said that I was fortunate to have been given an onlay as they were expensive for the NHS. I had an appointment yesterday and told the dentist that the sensitivity had not improved and I felt there was something wrong. She gave me the impression that I was making too much of it and that I wasn’t comparing like with like as I had no other sensitive teeth. I told her that I had sensitivity to cold when eating fruit and she told me not to eat cold things on that side of my mouth! She said that sensitivity was often worse in cold weather even though I have had the problem since summer of last year. I asked if I an xray would show up if there were any gaps and she said it might and might not but grudgingly agreed to do one. When the xray came through she pointed out that the onlay on one side was very close to the nerve of my tooth which could be causing the sensitivity. At this point she looked as though she was finally taking me seriously. I said to her “so the dentist cut too much of my tooth away?” she didn’t give a direct answer but said that the dentist had to create a stable platform for the onlay which the previous dentist felt was the best option for me. Again the advice was to monitor it and come back again in 6 months. She was quite flippant explaining that I could have the tooth taken out which would take the sensitivity away completely or the nerves could be killed and it was not a difficult procedure. I said that I did not want this and I did not want a gap. I said I did not want a bridge which would damage the teeth either side. I asked if the onlay could be removed and something placed over the exposed nerve to protect it which she said was an option when I came back next time.
I would really appreciate your impartial advice on this. I have no other fillings and have always looked after my teeth. If I lose this tooth it will be because of poor treatment by the dentist. Would a white filling have been better option although I was advised at the time that an onlay was the best long term solution.
I would like to retain what tooth I have left and need advice on whether I should insist that the onlay be removed straight away and the exposed nerve protected as I am concerned that every time I eat or drink something cold it is traumatising the nerve further. I would also like to complain about the dentist who carried out the initial work and the response by the senior dentist as both seemed to have shrugged their shoulders at the problem. Losing a tooth is a big deal to me and I feel as though as I am being fobbed off and any further delay would result in the definite loss of my tooth.
I would be grateful for your comments.

Do I need my crown removed for root canal treatment?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
Q.

When I was about 12 years old, I broke my front tooth playing. So, my dentist placed a temp cap because I also was wearing braces. once my correction was complete (when I was 16 or so), she replaced my cap with a ceramic cap (no root canal). Now I am 25 and during one of my regular check up, a different dentist suggested that I get a root canal treatment and then have a ceramic cap placed. My question is, since it is my front tooth, I am very paranoid about any treatment (coz it affects my looks) and wanted to know if a root canal and a ceramic cap will be a life long solution…are there any drawbacks?

Is a crown really needed after a root canal?

Friday, February 18th, 2011
Q.

Hi! I got question about root canal treatment. I work as a dental nurse(trainee for now) so i don’t know everything yet. My husband required root cana treatment for upper 6, that’s fine, but my question is will he need the crown on top of this toot,my dentis said that this is neccesary ,because the toof is dead and will be more brittle…I read on the forum that the crown is neccesay when tooth haven’t got big filling. now when i work as a dental nurse I’ve seen few cases, when the patient with the crown had decay under the crown. So finally question: is the crown is always needed?? thank you DR Hughes

Can you explain why I might not be a candidate for dental implants?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011
Q.

Hi I have had a front tooth (crowned) removed after having suffered an abcess. My NHS dentist was unable to perform root canal treatment due to there being virtually no root left and he had to remove the tooth. I have been advised that the only treatment left for me is a bridge (after approx 6 months of wearing a denture) which I understand would involve crowning healthy teeth either side. I cannot bear the denture I have been fitted with. Can you tell me why he would not mention dental implants as an alternative
Thanks

I need a bridge, do I have to have my root remove?

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011
Q.

I had a crown on my front tooth break off yesterday. Unfortunately, it broke the part of the tooth that was inside the crown so there is nothing to anchor the crown to. Dentist told me i have to have a bridge, which is OK, but I don’t understand why the root of the boken tooth has to be taken out. Why, as part of the bridge process, can’t the replacement tooth be glued to the root (like my temporary tooth currently is).

I am in massive pain after veneers, what should I do?

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011
Q.

I had crown lengthening procedure on 10 teeth followed by 10 porcelain veneers. I researched at length my chosen dentist and spent 9 months preparing with him prior to surgery and preparations. My crown lengthening was fine. My horrific pain started after first preparation. I have been in constant pain since July. My final veneers were fitted 6 weeks ago and look great. I have taken neuron round the clock and can both eat/drink hot/cold or chew as the pressure is too painful. My dentist has x-rayed and varnished with no results. My whole upper set of teeth throb at night. He is suggested removing two molar veneers to explore as he believes there could be leakage and referred pain. I have lost all confidence and I am reluctant to allow any further work without a second opinion. Please help as I am absolutely terrified of a lifetime of this pain. I do not know what to do or who to consult as I thought I had chosen the most qualified person in my area. Yours in anticipation.

Hi. I am a multiple sclerosis sufferer and take very high doses of pain relief. Because of this pain relief i have not felt any pain from bad teeth. I have a LOT of work that needs doing, nearley every tooth needs filling root canals or removing. Would i be able to get veneers on the n.h.s?
