Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011
Q.

I had braces 6 yrs back. Unfortunately, I did’nt continue wearing my retainers. Now, My front two teeth hv got less than 1.5 mm gap and same on right and left ( leaving 3 teeth from the front each side ( This is the best I can describe) Rest are all perfectly alligned. Please suggest me best treatment possible. I was htinkign to go for Invisalign Lite?? Can you also inform me the cost of treatment.

I wish I could send u my picture. People around me says that I really don’t need any treatment / they can barely spot the gap unless I show them.

Please guide me appropriately.

My fixed retainer is hurting, what could be the cause of this?

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr. Verma

Near the end of my treatment, a bonded retainer was permanently attached to my lower teeth from canine to canine two decades ago. I never had any problems with it until recently. A few days ago, I went to a dentist for a regular cleaning. After the scaling, I noticed that there was some discomfort between my lower two front teeth – it felt like there was something stuck in between there. I addressed this issue with the dentist, but she cannot find the reason for my discomfort, and she also claimed she did not damage my wire.

It has been three days since my cleaning, and I am now experiencing some mild soreness around the retainer area (ie. the same type of tightness one would feel when a wire is changed on one’s braces), especially near the left canine and the neighbouring incisor. Chewing gum and eating vegetables is a bit painful. I cannot find any damage, but is it possible for my wire to have been bent during cleaning? Has this ever happen to other patients of yours, and if so, what was done about it? Can an orthodontist, who has never seen me before, know if my bonded retainer is damaged or not? Or, can there be a different reason for my symptoms?

(For clarification: the wire is held in place by a dop of glue on each tooth)

Thank you for taking the time out to read my email. I am a bit anxious at the moment since I do not want my teeth to become misaligned again. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Is my Essix retainer causing an oral infection?

Friday, July 29th, 2011
Q.

Hi Mark. In your experience, can Essix retainers used to maintain orthodontic treatment give you fungal infections? I’ve had to have a replacement Essix retainer made after my old one has worn out but when I am wearing it, even for 10 minutes I am getting these white rings at the gumline, receding gums and white spots all over my gums from it. My new orthodontist has tried adjusting it and remaking it but the same thing keeps happening. I’ve never had the problem before as I have been wearing Essix retainers for 10 years now. The orthodontist won’t make me a new one and my general dentist is telling me to stop wearing it but I need to wear it to continue to keep my teeth straight but i’m damaging my gums in the process. What do you recommend? Many thanks.

My bottom teeth are crowding again even though i wear a retainer, what can I do?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.

Hi, I was just wondering if you could help me.
About 5 years ago I had braces for both my top and bottom teeth. After having my brace removed, I had to wear a retainer until my dentist told me otherwise. However over the last 2 years, on the bottom the first 6 teeth have begun to twist and move slightly back. It’s beginning to get really noticeable, and I’m just worried that it’s going to get worse as time goes on.
I’m 18 and in full time education, and was just wondering how much it would cost or if it would cost anything to get them sorted?

Thank you.

After years of brace work my teeth have drifted. What are my options?

Monday, May 16th, 2011
Q.

I had braces for 4 years when I was a teenager, and wore my retainer for 6 months longer than was required. Despite this my teeth have grown back to their original position. This is quite upsetting as you can imagine, since I spent my adolescence being ridiculed and going through quite a lot of pain for the braces, and it turns out it was all for nothing. I’m now 22, and don’t want to have to pay for the mistakes my orthodontist made. What treatments are available to me?

The new glue for my bonded retainers tastes weird. Can another material be used?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr Mark Hughes. I hope you can help me. Can you tell me how is the composite glued on bonded retainers supposed to feel? I had to have mine topped up again after 10 years of wearing but the stuff another orthodontist has used tastes like plastic and is making me feel quite sick. I have never had a problem with it previously but the stuff he has used feels very different to the cement used previously. It has been this way for around three months and has not got better. In my case can it be trimmed down and another material be put over the top of it? Its really getting me down. Thank you for your time and all the best.

Brace has made my tooth worse!

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011
Q.

Hi there di could you answer me a question please it would be off much assistance , I wore braces for three years and then a retainer for 18 months as a teenager and they straightened my teeth. I am now in my early 20s and one of my front teeth has moved over the past year or so and is now visably sticking out. What would be my options for moving it back? This wasn’t actually a problem before my teenage dental treatment! I don’t really want to go back to the days of train-tracks again, but equally it is making me self-conscious. I’m also not the best at dealing with pain! Please help! help please.

Q.

Hi, I am 20 years old, I had braces from 13-18, i wore my retainer afterwards, stopped wearing it as much a month ago and now i can feel my front teeth coming forward, I put my retainer back on, but it doesnt seem tight anymore, I dont know what to do, I havent been to my orthodonist for ages, and dont want to go back because he will have a go at me for not wearing the retainer all the time. If I continue to wear the retainer will they stop moving forward? or do i need to get help? Thanks,
