How Can I Get NHS Treatment for Gum Disease?

Friday, July 3rd, 2015
Q.

Before Christmas last year my dentist told me I had quite bad gum disease. In February this year my gums started bleeding and I used Corsodyl mouthwash (I had used it before) but my mouth and gums came up in ulcers and my gums were inflamed. My dentist couldn’t give me an appointment, I was in so much pain that I went to see another dental surgery who saw me there and then. The new dentist said I had an allergic reaction to the mouthwash. They discovered I have been grinding my teeth. Since then the ulcers have gone but now my gums have receded to the point that it feels like I have almost none, they hurt all the time, my teeth now hurt and I keep getting headaches. I saw the new dentists once a week for nearly 3 months and was sent to my GP for blood tests to check for underlying issues but it was clear. The new dentist said I need to see a periodontist – but they all charge more then I can afford. I’m a single parent on benefits and on NHS tax credit exemption. But I cannot find an NHS periodontist anywhere and I’m in constant pain. My GP referred me to a dental hospital but they do not offer the service I need. How can I get seen and treated via the NHS for this?

Is Periodontal Treatment Available on the NHS?

Tuesday, April 21st, 2015
Q.

My daughter, a type 1 diabetic, has been told at hospital she needs a periodontist to help cure her receding gums. She cannot afford private dental treatment as she is unemployed. She smokes too. Are there any periodontal practitioners that practice on the NHS? If not, where do we go from here? She is 30 and afraid of losing her teeth. Her gums have receded a lot, she is careful and cleans them with special brushes. If no NHS treatment is available, what else can she do? Anything she can buy to help at the chemist?

Dr Riten, I Need Your Help With My Loose Teeth. What Can Be Done?

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013
Q.

Hi Dr Riten,

To cut a long story short, I am unfortunately suffering the consequences of a protracted period in my life where I never regularly went to the dentist. I have in recent years had some periodontal treatment to try to put some of this right, but I am still having problems. My teeth are actually in quite good shape, it’s my gums and bone loss that is the problem.

I now have some loose teeth, and my gums have receded to quite a large degree. I am also feeling discomfort when eating on one side of my mouth. This has dramatically worsened in the last twelve months.

I am now at a point where it is causing me to feel extremely self conscious, and, despite my nervousness at the thought of getting the situation rectified, I know I must.

I would love to attend the Mulberry Clinic, as I tend to be in the area during the week, and the glowing reports of the clinic are second to none. However, I do live in Taunton in Somerset, and was wondering if there may be somewhere more local to my home address that you could possibly recommend? Any advice would be extremely gratefully received.

Best regards.

I Suffer From Bad Breath, Despite Regularly Brushing My Teeth. What Treatments Are Available To Combat This Problem?

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013
Q.

Hello Andrew,

I have been suffering from bad breath for many years and now realise that I need to seek proffessional help in order to obtain a long term solution. To give you a brief idea of my problem, I brush my teeth at least twice a day and in the way in which my dentist advises. I also regularly clean my tongue and use mouthwash, but within one hour of my routine, to maintain oral hygeine, I can guarantee that the bad breath will be back. Although my gums are alot better than they used to be, I still believe that it is the gum disease, that my dentist tells me I have, that is the main cause of the problem. Can you advise me of any treatments available that I can undergo to remove this problem from my life.

Kind Regards

Do you think my receding gums are due to the hard splint that I wear?

Friday, May 18th, 2012
Q.

Some of my gums are receding. I’ve been wearing hard splints for 8 years. The diagnosis was bruxism. A year ago I started with a strong and nagging pain in my neck and some headaches in the morning. I;ve got a new splint wich helps me to get rid of the neck and head pain but I feel sore in the gums of my two front teeth and canines. My gums aren’t bleeding or red or swollen. I don’t have any problem of bad breath or tartar or caries. I’ve been at specialist in jaws and the jaws are fine. What can I do? I couldn’t get a splint well done here in UK. The one I’ve got doen’t fit and causes intolerable pain. I’ve spent 8 months complaining. Just the gums in my front teeth and two on the left are receded.

I have periodontal disease. Is there anything that can be done?

Monday, November 22nd, 2010
Q.

I was recently referred to a dental hospital by my dentist, the consultant says I have periodontal disease and there is nothing that can be done. Not even implants due to extensive bone loss. I wanted veneers and my dentist had discussed fitting a splint and then veneers. Are there really no options available to me cosmetically??

Can implants prevent further bone and tooth loss?

Thursday, August 12th, 2010
Q.
Hi – I am a very worried 40 year old. I have recently had extensive perodontic treatment (deep clean) and been told I have bone loss. My worry is that I will eventually lose my teeth and am particulalry worried about the front teeth. What can I do now? – Can I have implants to prevent further loss and thereby reducing my chances of having implants? Thanks ,
