Hi Dr Gambroudes. I’m 22 years old and an nhs patient. I recently went to see a dentist and he said I needed a fixed brace and 2 teeth out to make room for my 4 teeth at the front which are overcrowded. Years ago, I was told that I couldn’t have braces because my jaw isn’t correct and unless I had my jaw cracked into place. I have chosen not to have my jaw cracked and recently this dentist said that it is possible to have fixed braces. This is confusing. I was also wondering whether I have to pay the nhs for braces or not? Thanks.

I Have Been Told That I Would Need My Jaw Aligned Before Having Fixed Braces? Does This Sound Correct?
Monday, October 13th, 2014Will I Have A Scar On My Face If I Get Jaw Alignment Surgery?
Monday, December 16th, 2013Hi, I am 17 and I have recently been to see the orthodontist about getting braces (After being on the waiting list for quiet a while). I have really poorly shaped teeth, and you can’t see my bottom teeth because of my top teeth (I think this is called an overbite, I’m not too sure). The orthodontist recommended that I have surgery to bring my bottom jaw forward, would I be able to get this free or would I have to pay for my surgery? Please could you tell me a little bit about it, and would I have a visible scar on my face if I went through with the operation? Thank you.
Is There An Alternative To Breaking The Jaw To Fix A Gummy Smile?
Thursday, September 5th, 2013Hi, the problem that I would like to to discuss is that I have quite a high smile line, where, if I smile too much my gums show and I’m a little self-concious about it. I was told by my dentist when I was younger and given a brace, that I could have my jaw broke and fixed to sort the problem out, however I didn’t much like the sound of that as you can imagine. However my friend has recently had it done and her smile line looks much better. I am now 21 years old and was wondering if you had an alternative option for a procedure such as this? Many thanks
and kind regards.
Do you think I’m suitable for jaw re-alignment surgery?
Friday, July 20th, 2012My top jaw hangs over my bottom jaw quite far, the last time I went to the orthodontist the gap was 5.5mm but I think it has got bigger, I can fit the tip of my little finger in the gap. It causes me constant ache in my jaws, it feels stiff and causes headaches and pain around my face. I think my teeth also rest slightly more to the left. I have had 4 teeth out when I was around 13 and had braces several times through my teens. I wondered if I am suitable for jaw realignment as a friend of mine has had it done and he has been very happy with the outcome. I am 21 so I don’t know if I am able to get this on the NHS, or where I need to get more information. I have a doctors appointment on Wednesday to discuss it with my GP.
