Having initially been told I wouldn’t need to have two ‘exposures’, I am now being advised differently, any advice?

Q.
In a weeks time I am having the first stage of two implants being put in, on my top jaw near the front, after two extractions and a bone graft last june. I will have a bridge as well as I now have three spaces. When I was given a quote in June, the dentist said it was very unlikely I would need to have two ‘exposures’ but now he says I do have to, costing an additional £165 each, or otherwise I can not wear my denture for the next six months. I simply could not understand his explanation. Could you please explain? Thank you.,

Is it normal procedure to have a tooth extracted after the failure of a root canal treatment?

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010
Q.
I am concerned that I made the wrong decision on having a tooth removed last year as I was explaining the situation to a friend and I wanted to seek some clarification so I can put my mind at rest about the decision I made. I hope this is appropriate for me to ask the further steps I have now taken to resolve this has been to have a bridge fitted. I was experiencing toothache on a tooth that had a large filling- half the side of it had come away previously. I had root treatment carried out and was told it would be difficult with it being a back molar. The root treatment failed so I had this done again and was given a course of antibiotics. However, a week after the second root treatment I was still in pain and my dentist said that extraction was the next option or to take another course of antibiotics. I chose extraction as it was a difficult tooth and when I asked my dentist about having it built up should it be ok I was informed that ‘It would be tricky to build it out on the palatal aspect and it would cause difficulty in cleaning, stagnation and further disease’. I know there’s no point in looking back now as the tooth has gone but it this normal procedure if root canal treatment does not work? Thank you.,

Would it be possible to have an immediate implant?

Monday, October 4th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Solanki, Do you do the Immediate implant placement? I am told by my brazilian dentist that I need to extract one of my tooth and that he recomended that I did the immediate implant placement called in portuguese’ implante com carga imediata.’ I can not afford to loose this tooth and will not return to Brazil in time to deal with his infected tooth. If you can not help me, could you recommend me someone? Thank you for your attention, Yours sincerely,

Do you know of any cases where white fillings have caused OFG?

Monday, October 4th, 2010
Q.
After many years of neglecting my teeth I went back to a dentist and needed some filling work and extractions. After attending the dentist for a number of months I noticed that I was getting a swelling [non tender] around the mouth and lower face. This was eventually diagnosed as OFG [ora-facial granularmytosis]. I still suffer from this and, whilst not painful, iit is unsightly. Do you know of any cases/instances where having white fillings fitted kicked off a condition such as this? I don’t seem to be able to get to the bottom of the cause and wondered if it might be the white filling material in the mouth? Many thanks,,

Can you use Invisalign for top teeth and metal braces for bottom teeth, or would you not advise this?

Monday, October 4th, 2010
Q.
Hi, my daughter 17 has just been told she needs braces for her teeth and can have NHS metal braces free. The bottom requires a tooth extraction because of overcrowding but the top is more minor. She is happy to have a metal brace on the bottom but very unhappy about the top as it will be very visible and she plans to start a teaching course next year. Is it possible to have invisalign on the top only (which I could just afford to pay for) and metal on the bottom or would you not recommend this?,

My son has a small jaw and after years of treatment his teeth are still not aligned. Can you help?

Monday, September 27th, 2010
Q.
hi! my son is now 14 years of age. and has a small jaw. when he was 10 his teeth were crowded so a dentist recommended braces for the upper jaw and he also removed two permanent teeth from the upper jaw. after nearly two years of treatment the teeth were still not aligned. now we are considering braces again. we went to two different orthodontists, both saying different things. one wants to remove two teeth from the lower jaw to make the number of teeth equal on both the upper and lower jaw. the other one is saying he would straighten out the teeth without extractions. i am so confused. please help!!,
