Will I need dentures before I am 50?

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr Patel. I have had advanced gum disease for about 20 years owing to my fear of going to the dentist, previous traumatic experiences at the dentist and poor hygeine. At the age of 42 I have now fortunately overcome my fear and found a lovely gentle dentist and I am now having regular checkups and hygeine sessions. I also been referred for and have undergone peridontal treatment in the last two years, and I am maintaining good dental hygeine every day. However my degree of gum disease has led to a significant amount of bone loss. I currently have most of my teeth, but many of my upper teeth are loose and my dentist does not hold out much hope for me holding on to them long term. I have a crown on one front tooth, and a veneer on the other front tooth. My gums have receded so far that the crown peg is visible now and the tooth with the veneer is similarly receded, exposing the part of the tooth which originally would have been hidden in the gum. My other top front teeth are discoloured and gappy and I am very self conscious about my teeth. My bottom teeth are reasonably secure. I really would like some advice about what to do next. My dentist is reluctant to replace my front veneer as the tooth is already loose and he doesn’t want to disturb it further. My crown will have to be replaced shortly I think. I would like to know what the options might be for someone like me who has significant bone loss. Are implants out of the question, or am I really now facing the prospect of wearing dentures before I am 50? I would really appreciate your advice regarding my options and the possible costs involved if implants could be an option – at least for my top front teeth.

Many thanks.

I have neglected my teeth because of dental phobia, can veneers fill in the missing teeth?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012
Q.

hello dr moore i would like to start by telling you that i am very scared of going to the dentist and because of this i have neglected my teeth in the past , i have now decided to have my teeth repaired before its too late. i watched a program on tv last night about instant veneers and i am very interested about them because there isnt any drilling or pain involved (which is why i have being missing my dentist appointments in the first place). i have some of my side teeth missing and i was wondering if i could i have instant veneers to fill in the gaps or would i have to go to the dentist to have new teeth screwed in first then have the veneers that go over your teeth thanks for your time.

What can you suggest to help me beat my dental phobia so I can receive treatment?

Q.

I haven’t been to a Dentist in 10 years or more. I am very Dentist phobic, I am an ex smoker. My teeth are very stained, I have a huge build up of plaque. I’m pretty sure I have some form of gum disease. I have a couple of teeth that feel as if they are shifting/loosening bottom front. I have a couple of back teeth that are broken. I’m really not sure how many of my teeth can be saved. My Daughter is getting married in August and I really need to get my teeth sorted once and for all. I’m ashamed of the state I have let my teeth get into. Would it be possible to have them all sorted before August if I could pluck up the courage to go. Also would a cosmetic Dentist be able to do the work if most of my teeth couldn’t be saved? Thank you.

What can I do to salvage my remaining teeth and dental bridge?

Friday, March 23rd, 2012
Q.

!5 Yrs ago I had lost a lot of my top teeth due to decay my dentist said he would have to extract the remaining ones and fit a denture .I was mortified at this as i was only 45 ,After pleading for an alternative, he said he would try and file the remaining teeth down and fit 2 bridges to make a top set of teeth .This was done and for 15 yrs i have had no problems till now. I do have poor gum health despite flossing under bridges and using electric toothbrush with corsodyl toothpaste .I simply cannot bear hygienist cleaning teeth as I have such terrible sensitivity to the cold water and this is something I have always suffered with .My dentist left the practice 5 yrs ago and it was taken over by a young female dentist who when I had 4 bottom teeth fracture extracted them and as i only had 4 teeth left suggested removing them and fitting a bottom denture .unfortunately she had trouble removing them as they were strong teeth and ripped my gums so badly I had multiple stitches .This experience was so horrendous I now am terrified to go back even though my bottom denture is really loose and so uncomfortable .Now I have pain with hot drinks under the end tooth of one of the 2 top bridges. What are my options ? as the thought of her taking out my remaining top teeth and fitting denture terrifies me.i I am on denplan with her and there are no other dentists in my area(cardiff) that will take me unless i go private and I cannot afford that as I am now 60 and on a basic state pension .Hope you can suggest what options I have. thank you regards

Can sedation help me with my dental phobia?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011
Q.

I have a dentist fear of the dentistry tools and of the actual dentist and I hate needles. This has grown and only appeared a few years ago after having teeth whitening and it was with a dentist that let me suffer sensitivity whilst me telling them it was hurting my teeth an dthem choosing to ignore it I suffered terribly sensitivty and as a consqeunce mistrust in the dentisand therefore I always change dentists for things. I opt for iv sedation which doesnt do anything until I m ready or treatment but it is hard enough to get through the doors of the surgery. I need a hygieiniest clean and two teeth removed as a checkup said and Ii may need a filling. ? Can I also be sedated and get all of that done? Can I be sedated before I go in? The thought of seeing a dentist in a dentist room is beyond petrifying I wouldnt mind if the dentist came to my work. Is that possible at least I feel marginally in control. Many thanks,

My teeth are in a bad state after my liver disease, what can I do?

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011
Q.

After having Liver Disease for 22 years, followed by a transplant, by teeth are literally wasting away. My old liver used to prevent me from having enough Vit D and calcium. What can I do. I have got an enormous phobia of anything to do with dentists, All the edges of my teeth have worn away and I have got several decayed teeth. I do sometimes get bad pain. I wish that I could smile but my teeth are so horrible. I am frightened about what all the treatment would cost, as I am 58 but not yet working after my transplant. I am also very stressed just thinking about what might need to be done.

I’m scared of injections, is there an alternative?

Monday, May 23rd, 2011
Q.

I have a top jaw tooth that has left the gum and is loose also the next tooth to it is a crown on a pin is also loose but not as much movement as the big tooth I took many years to get over my childhood fears of a dentist and have for a long time gone for checkups and hygenist visits twice a year. My dentist has said I would need a roof ingection for the extraction. I would like to know if there is any other way these teeth can be removed as I still remember the pain of this injection for another tooth a few years ago, and can not convince myself it will be different this time. hoping for some advice how to cope with this i.e. could I have a general I am 63 years old, and on blood pressure tablets.

Monday, May 16th, 2011
Q.

Hi i am a very nervous patient when it comes to dentists, when i was 15 i had a really bad extraction that has scared me off dentists tottaly, im now 24 and need some major work in the form of crowns, fillings and proberly another extraction or two, and i guess i would need all that done before i could even think of getting lumineers to then cover it all up? just writeing down all the dental work turns my stomach, would a dentist condider doing the majority if not all the work i need in one visit under sedation?
