What Options Do I Have as a Nervous Patient?

Thursday, March 12th, 2015
Q.

Hello. I have a huge fear of the dentist. I need a lot of work done and ultimately want to get caps or crowns on all my teeth so they look nice for the first time in my life.

Because of my fear I am looking for a dentist that will knock me out so I don’t know what is going on.

I can no longer eat properly for fear of one of my teeth falling out so I tend to just have liquid food, so I don’t have to bite down or chew.

I also need a finance option, as I know a lot of work needs to be done and wont be able to afford all of the treatment up front.

Please help.

As a Nervous Patient, How Can I Get My Front Tooth Repaired?

Tuesday, March 10th, 2015
Q.

Hi! I have a huge fear of the dentist due to having several heavy handed dentists when I was a lot younger who didn’t address my fear at al, which has caused me not to visit a dentist for around 4 years. I am 22, and have very weak enamel on my teeth. I do try to maintain a healthy diet, however I have suffered from re-flux in the past which I believe has caused an increase in the decay in my teeth. My front tooth weakened and chipped 4 years ago and I was told I may need root canal treatment. However at first I was given a filling and I was too scared to go back after this, and since then my back teeth are suffering. My teeth would often break off slowly which has resulted in my losing 2 lower teeth and one upper on the right hand side and one lower one upper on left. This is very frightening for me and I’ve found it so hard to visit a dentist due to my fear. I desperately want my front tooth repaired as it is becoming thinner all the time. I also am having difficulty eating due to my back teeth. Is there anything that will resolve these underlying issues? I’m terrified of a dentist saying there’s nothing they can do and I eventually lose all my teeth. Thank you.

What Alternatives Are There for False Teeth?

Thursday, February 5th, 2015
Q.

Hi. I have lost all my top teeth along with my confidence. I would be okay with false teeth but is there a more realistic option such as dental implants? Also, I feel ashamed of my situation and would like to know the best way to approach it. I also have a huge fear of dentists and needles etc. This stems from being a child and treated poorly by a dentist who removed healthy teeth for no reason and performed other unnecessary work.

Do You Have Any Advice for Dental Phobic Patients?

Friday, September 12th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. Could you please advise me on getting my teeth treated? I’m so scared of dentists because of a bad experience I had in the past, but now I really need dental work done. I can’t even look at people right in their face when I speak to them. And I also need assurance that the work I need can be done without me having to be put to sleep, because that’s the main fear I have. Thank you, I have totally let myself down by letting it go this long without dental treatment. I don’t have one full tooth in my mouth. I would just really appreciate some help and friendly advice. Thank you very much.

Can You Recommend A Dentist Where I Can Get My Teeth Fixed? I Have A Real Fear Of Dentists.

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Gambroudes, I have a real fear of dentists. The whole experience is a nightmare. Can you recommend a dentist where I can get my teeth fixed? I have very badly rotten and broken teeth throughout my mouth but now it’s getting to the point that I no longer feel I want to open my mouth. I want them fixed or removed and replaced if possible. I want to go out and be able to smile at people without them giving me dirty looks. Also having teeth will boost my confidence and allow me to get a face to face job instead of me applying for all the job where I don’t have to see customers so to speak. Please can you help.

I Have Suffered From Bulimia For Many Years And As A Result This Has Affected My Teeth. Is This Something You Have Ever Had Experience With?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. I need some advice. I suffered with bulimia for many years and as a result this has affected my teeth hugely. I have lost many of my back teeth as a result and the rest are very weak. I also have a large gap in the front of my two teeth which has been a huge dent in my confidence. I am now in a place where I want to get this sorted and I’m aware of the cost of impacts etc. My worry is I have not seen a dentist for years due to shame and embarrassment of my bulimia. Is this something you have ever had experience with? Thanks.

I Had A Bad Experience With Needles When I Was Young And I Haven’t Been Back Since. Are There Any Other Options For Phobia Patients?

Friday, July 18th, 2014
Q.

Hello. I have not been near a dentist for over 20 years as when I was younger had a terrible experience with a certain needle in my gum. As I remember they made a right mess from and I have never forgotten this. I know I need quite a lot of work doing being 43, but I cannot bear the thought of that needle going into my gum and I’m not sure how I would react. Are there other options out there? I do not have any issues with needles elsewhere just in my mouth, your advise would be helpful. Thanks.

My Wisdom Tooth Is Very Brittle But I’m Scared Of What Will Happen. What Should I Do?

Thursday, June 12th, 2014
Q.

Hello. I have a wisdom tooth on the left of my jaw. It is quite broken and parts of it are down to the gum-line. It has a hole in the middle where my filing has fallen out and it is very brittle and breaks a lot. I’m currently in a lot of pain with it and need to visit the dentist but I’m very scared of the dentist. What will happen? Will it be painful? Will they have to pull my tooth out and as I’m scared it will hurt will they be able to give me anything? I hope you can help me understand what will happen. Thank you.

Q.

Hi Mark. My mum is 49 and she has got a real bad phobia of dentists due to her brother struggling to come round after having a tooth out as a kid. Now she’s lost most of her teeth and suffering from severe depression and she never leaves the house. She is on benefits. Can she get help from anywhere? I just want her to live her life not hide away. She has never had her photo taken and rarely smiles. She hasn’t been to a dentist since she was 9 years old. Thanks.

I Have Extreme Dental Phobia And My Teeth Are In A Pitiful State. Do You Think I Will Need To Undergo Surgery?

Thursday, May 8th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I am the mother of 4 boys and I am 47 years old. I have extreme dental phobia. I haven’t been to a dentist for more than 15 years! Now my mouth is really in a pitiful condition. I am planning to visit a dentist now as I have lost my smile and being a teaching assistant I feel that it is an important tool to communicate with children.
I have a question: Most of my teeth are broken up to the gum-line. After 4/5 years my gum is now closed and the root I assume must be inside. I have never had any infection/ pain or abscess. Do you think I will need a surgical extraction? I wish I could get my smile back as I am willing to extract all of my teeth and get dentures.
Thank you for your precious time.
