Have dental veneers darkened over time?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q.
I had a complete restoration, Empress Crowns, with several veneers on the front lower teeth. The color I picked was the 2nd to the whitest on the color panel. I always wanted to have really white teeth and my smile was narrow…that is why I got the work done. Now, 7 years later, my teeth look almost 2 shades darker. I was told that the porcelain would not change color. What is happening and what can I do about it? My new dentist indicated that as I age, my real teeth are getting darker. My original dentist never mentioned any such thing. I thought I would always have a bright white smile.,

Okay to leave fallen out dental crown until dentist returns?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q.
My crown has fallen out (back tooth) but my dentist is away from the practice for another week. I don’t really want to see a locum as my own dentist puts me at ease. As I’m not experiencing any pain/discomfort (yet!) will I cause further damage by waiting for my dentist’s return?,

Could abscess be caused by dental crown?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q.
When receiving a crown, should the crown touch the gum line? or is it ok for there to be a gap from the crown to the gum line? I ask this because I went into the dentist and received two crowns on both my baby teeth, in which I do not have an adult took under it. The one tooth where the crown touched the gum line resulted in being just fine, However; the other crown on my other tooth did not touch the gum line and I received an abscess tooth. Could it be the reason I received this abscess tooth be caused from improper fitting of the crown? It s it possible for food to get into my gums that way?,

Is it possible that I have a dental implant allergy

Monday, January 4th, 2010
Q.
I have just had a dental implant done and the crown fitted a few weeks ago. A few days after the crown was fitted a started to have a horrible horrible taste in mouth several times a day and antibiotics and mouthwash that my dentist recommended have not made any difference. My dentist insists I do not have an infection and that he has no idea what could be wrong. He did and X-ray and said that it was fine. When I suck on the tooth the tatse fills my mouth. what could it be? the implant is very stable (not loose at all) and I have no pain and no real swelling or inflammation. Could it be an allergy to the implant?,

Why is that my crowns and veneers are not whiter anymore?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009
Q.
PORCELAIN TEETH CHANGING COLOR I had a full restoration in 2000-01 using empress crowns and veneers on the front lower teeth. The crown and veneer color were the second whitest you could get. I wanted the whitest but my dentist talked me out of it. My teeth looked fantastic for several years but now have turned off white. I was told that the porcelain would never change color…that is why I got the work done. My smile was very white for the first 5 years but has now changed to off-white..not very pretty. I have my teeth cleaned every 3 months and brush and floss 3 times a day. What is going on? I have pictures I can send. I am so upset because I wanted a really white smile and paid $30,000 to get one.

Are the crowns the only solution for my strange bite

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr. Caplan I have a strange bite where my teeth only touch at the very back. I have had this since childhood and have learnt to compensate accordingly (no problems eating etc.). I am now 34 and my new dentist advised there are too choices, surgery – which I would rather avoid especially since the reults are not a given and secondly to crown the teeth and create a new bite. This would mean crowning 10 teeth on the top and ten on the bottom. My dentist says it would change the way I speak (get rid of my slight lisp) and correct my bite and prevent it worsening over time and over-crowding of the teeth. Are crowns the right solution? 20 crowns seems very extensive and no doubt expensive! What problems could I forsee? Will I develop problems in the future if I do not do this? How long with crowns last? Thank-you!

What are the pros and cons of having posts added to root canals?

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having posts added to root canals? If it is not absolutely necessary, would it be wiser to wait? At what age do dentists start advising people to add posts? I have had a few front crowns for a few decades now. Thanks!!

What can I do to reduce the size of my central incisors?

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q.
Hi, My central incisors are rather large compared to my other teeth, I saw on the internet that the average size of the crownisabout 6mm and mine are well over 10mm. When I was younger I had a brace to bring down my canine teeth, this brace re-aligned my teeth nicely, however my central teeth still look(ed) large in comparison to the others. I have always been really consious about my smile and would love to have a smile that I am comfortable with. So, I was wondering what action I could take to reduce the size of my central incisors and a rough estimate of how much this would cost. Thanks in advance.
