What are my Options for Broken and Damaged Teeth?

Monday, November 24th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I had a major problem in my younger days, as I had a fear of the dentist.  This led me to actually not take proper care of my gums, and as a result a few of my teeth have fallen out. Most of my teeth have been damaged/broken from high impact sports that I used to do such as MMA, American football etc.  My question is, what are my options? My teeth now need to be replaced at the front, and the back teeth that are damaged and loose from impact injury. Also, how much is likely to cost me if I were to be referred to a private dentist? I’m starting a company and will be looking to finance this as I need to look presentable.

As A Soldier I Lost Most Of My Tooth In An Explosion. I Have A Business Now And I’d Like To Align My Teeth To Improve My Chances Of Success. What Are My Options?

Monday, June 23rd, 2014
Q.

Hello Sir. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am a former soldier and whilst on operations in Afghanistan I lost a front tooth in a IED explosion whilst in a vehicle. The damage was minor and limited to a tooth and a broken leg. Now I’ve left I’ve started my own unmanned air vehicle business and would like to get my front teeth aligned and whitened to improve my first impressions when meeting potential clients.
I fully understand you wouldn’t be able to give me much of a solution without a consultation but roughly what are my options? I’m not sure what the MOD dentist put on it to get the shape back but it was some form of putty that’s rock solid. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards.

The small dip after every meal or drink goes yellow, so how can I get around this problem? (I brush twice daily, once in the morning and once at night before bed) any help would be fantastic I’ve started brushing even more recently to try get rid of the problem but nothing seems to work and obviously is knocking on my confidence a bit. Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Should I Get An X-ray Check For My Chipped Teeth?

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes, I had a fall yesterday and chipped the bottom of two of my front teeth. About one quarter of each tooth is chipped off. I went to see my dentist immediately and she told me that no nerves are exposed, and to wait for about five days for the teeth to heal before doing the filling. My teeth only hurt if they are tapped, and then it feels sensitive and quite sore. I asked if an X-ray is needed, and my dentist said no. In the meantime, she gave me painkillers. I would like a second opinion. Is she right that I should wait a couple of days to do the filling and not immediately? I would be very grateful to have your advice, thanks so much!

Can the NHS help me with crowns and veneers following an accident?

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012
Q.

Hi,
I was involved in an RTA last February, I lost 1 tooth and had a lot of damage to my other 4 front teeth. The NHS dentist I went to did (in my opinion) a really poor job. They patched them up with filler, using two different types so they don’t even match! The sizes are wrong and the bridge he put in sticks out like a sore thumb. I had root canal on both my upper two front and and the damage on one was half the tooth missing. I’ve had to go back as the filler has come off twice. Surely I need crowns or veneers? I cannot afford to go private. Where do I stand getting this sorted on the NHS? I’m 31 and have taken really good care of my teeth, check ups every 6 months/brushing/flossing. I’ve never even needed a filling so this is all very upsetting.

I have been quoted £8,500 for a new bridge, are dental implants a better option for me?

Friday, September 14th, 2012
Q.

Hi,

Maybe you can advise.. six years ago I had my two incisors removed and two separate maryland bridges placed onto my front two teeth.

One has broken twice and been cemented back in each time. Of the adjoining teeth – one is OK and the other a little decayed where the metal arm joins it (it doesn’t any more).

I have two separate quotes and approaches from two dentists. One involves work on maryland/pontiac bridges to strengthen it circa £2,500 and the other involves removing the two front roots and inserting a large bridge across the gaps left by the four front ones.

I understand the prognosis for the latter is probably better long term. However that’s £8,500.

I also understand that implants might be options especially at that price level.

I am however struggling to understand why the quote for that bridge is £8,500.

Is this a fair appraisal of my options and do you think those costs are reasonable? Thank you.

I have damaged my tooth in an accident, how soon is too soon to have orthodontic treatment?

Monday, March 5th, 2012
Q.

I suffered injuries to my front teeth in a serious cycling accident two months ago. A blow to the mouth damaged four teeth and I also had an abcess a week after the accident.

I have a minor chip to a canine, but the other three are more complicated.

1.1 is fractured, but vital, and has had a composite temporary restoration with a plan to crown it once 2.1 settles down.

2.2 has has RCT performed by an endodontist. 2.1 is pushed inwards and my dentist has discussed various options, including watch and wait, RCT and crown or an implant. The endodontist suggested being referred to an othodontist to have it “straightened” back to its original position, but not doing anything surgical. The tooth is vital, but my dentist advises that it might need RCT at some point in the future. What options might an othrodontist consider to “push out” from behind a single central incisor in a case like this?

Thanks for any advice offered!
