Can I Have Implants Fitted Privately and Then a Bridge and Crowns on the NHS?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2015
Q.

Dear doctor. I have no teeth in the upper jaw and only 5 teeth in the lower jaw. I am unemployed and have been told that I can get a bridge and crowns on the NHS. Would I be able to have implants fitted privately and allow the NHS to fit the bridge and crowns? My parents are willing to help me with the cost of just the implants. Please help me as I have trouble wearing dentures. And I also have quite a few medical conditions. Thank you.

How Can I Stop the Pain in my Tooth?

Tuesday, April 14th, 2015
Q.

Good evening. I have had a lot of trouble with two of my teeth. I kept getting bad infections. My dentist took the tooth out and gave me a bridge. Once again, two days after I had pus leaking from the tooth with the bridge. After a course of antibiotics my dentist removed the bridge and took out the root which was very smelly and infected and gushed with blood. He had to put a stitch in to stop the bleeding and then put the new plate over the top. I’m in so much pain. He told me to take it out this morning and clean and put it back in. Please can you help me? My next appointment is not until a fortnight’s time. Regards.

Can I Have a Crown Replaced so I Can Have a Bridge Fitted?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015
Q.

The post on my front tooth has broken off leaving a stump and the root in place
The other front tooth had a crown fitted to match the now missing crown. I now have an NHS denture that feels like a blob in my mouth – one side of the plate leaves a gap between the denture and my teeth so when I eat food goes down between my teeth and under the plate, leaving some food trapped.  Is it possible to replace the crown I have on the remaining front tooth to enable a bridge to be fitted? Thank you.

Is It Safe to Cut a Bridge to Treat an Infected Tooth?

Monday, March 30th, 2015
Q.

Hi, I have a porcelain coated platinum bridge which I have had for about 23 years and it has not caused any problems. But now I have an infection in one of the teeth holding the bridge, which I have been given antibiotics for.
My dentist said he needs to remove the infected tooth and therefore will cut the bridge at the other tooth and then remove part of the bridge with the infected tooth. Is it safe to cut the bridge? Thank you.

Is There an Alternative to Having a Dental Plate?

Friday, March 20th, 2015
Q.

I have a tooth on a plate, it is the third one in from the front. I have had it for a long time but it doesn’t feel as secure as before. I have been advised to have an implant by my dentist, and I can’t have a bridge as the other teeth are not too strong and are filled quite heavily. But I would rather have another single tooth, due to the expense. Is there a procedure where the tooth can be put on with 2 clips attached to the two surrounding teeth, rather than a plate? I would be grateful for any advice.

I Struggle to Speak After My Treatment. What Should I Do?

Friday, March 13th, 2015
Q.

Sir, I have huge gap between my six upper front teeth. I went to the dentist and he trimmed my all six teeth and placed a bride with two extra fake teeth. After the treatment I am not able to speak properly and it is very uncomfortable for me. Do I have another choice to get out of these problems? I am really tense and scared of re-treating them again. Before going to the dentist I didn’t have any problems. I just wanted to improve the aesthetics. And now I am thinking this was the biggest mistake.

Can Bridges be Made from Anything Other Than Metal?

Friday, January 9th, 2015
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. My 15 year old son has just had bridges fitted for two missing teeth either side of front two teeth. He has had two years with braces to get his teeth into the right position for this treatment. Unfortunately, the metal that is now behind his two front teeth makes his teeth look grey, the colour of the metal. Could he have had the bridge made of anything other than metal that wouldn’t show through the teeth, and is it too late to change this?
Thank you.

I Have A Central Incisor Which Sits Behind The Rest Of My Smile. What Can Be Done To Fix This?

Friday, September 26th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I have this upper left central incisor situated around 0.7 cm behind the rest of the teeth. It gives the impression as if that tooth is missing when I talk. It affects my social life a lot.
This problem has persisted since my childhood. The misplaced tooth was on the process of eruption while the milk tooth at that place was not falling off. So by the time the milk tooth fell off, the permanent tooth had already developed into the present place. I am now 23 years old.
Please tell me about my available options for the treatment of my condition.
Thank you.

Would it be Possible to Have an Implant to Replace a Broken Crown?

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. My crown (second from middle) recently became loose. My dentist removed it and stuck it temporarily, but it came out the next day. About ten years ago my crown broke off and the then dentist replaced it by putting a post into the tooth, and this has now apparently broken. My current dentist has told me that he now cannot drill into my root and crown and so I need to consider having the root out and a bridge put in, or would it be possible to have an implant? The root seems to be OK from what I can see, it’s not loose. I don’t understand why the dentist cannot put in another post. Can you make any suggestions please?

I’ve Been Told I Need an Apicectomy, but the Pain Has Subsided. Do I Still Need Treatment?

Tuesday, September 9th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes, I hope you are well. I have been told by my dentist that I need an apicectomy above my bridge (the 3 top teeth). Unfortunately, I didn’t ask enough questions at the consultation so I’m not really sure what this means, and the dentist said I may have gum shrinkage afterwards. Will this be noticeable? I am not in any pain anymore and I don’t think I want it done if it’s going to look funny, and it will be pointless if I no longer need it. Also, I have to have another apicectomy on the bottom gold crown, but this time I have to go to an outpatients hospital instead. Thank you for your help.
