I lost my smile 2 years ago starting with a small gap

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012
Q.

I am really really confused on what to do. My whole life I was complimented on my smile, my smile was the only thing I had going for me, I lost that smile 2 years ago.I have been having so many problems I don’t know where to turn or where to begin. I am on my 4th dentist just this last year and paid over $3,500 already…my problem began with a space that started 2 years ago with my front teeth..I was told I had periodontal disease, I could never afford the money to have that problem resolved so with that I started losing my back bottom teeth, and now 3 more bottom teeth need root canal treatment.I only have 8 teeth on the bottom and I now need 2 pulled in the back at the top. Most of my teeth are crowned at the top but.the latest dentist told me I need the 2 back teeth pulled because they are growing down because I have no bottom teeth to stop them from growing. If I get that done, and have the surgery (which I can’t), he said I can get braces after that to fix the gap I now have between my teeth…can I still get braces with so many pulled teeth and having crowns which are over 15 years old? Won’t they get weak and fall out? Since I have so many problems, should I get them all pulled and get dentures? Do I get my 3 bottom teeth root canaled and then get a partial? I don’t know what to do first, being I can afford all the work, I think my best bet would be to get them all pulled but my dentist doesn’t recommend me doing that.I also keep getting abcess, the last one almost put me in the hospital, it was all through my body, I woke up with it and couldn’t even stand,I am just so confused.I haven’t taken a picture or smiled in 2 years and this has gotten me so depressed.I cry every time I look in the mirror, I brush my teeth looking down so I don’t see myself…I don’t even know if I trust these dentist because my first dentist did some work (scaling) and sent me to an orthodontist for my braces and after this new dentist took x-rays, fitted me for braces, he told me he needed a letter from a endo (some other type of dentist), so I had to go to this new dentist who told me I needed a lot more work before I got my braces…so he sent me to yet another dentist, who then pulled 2 teeth and just told me I needed to more pulled.I had 4 sets of x-rays done by each dentist, they all did some work, and I’m back where I started.PLEASE tell me what to do, if you can lead me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.I hate myself right now and I can’t live like this anymore ;((

Thank You!!!

What can be done to rectify filing that was done on my teeth during braces treatment?

Monday, May 14th, 2012
Q.

Hi there, I’ve had braces on for the past 18 months and they are due to come off in a couple of weeks. I am unhappy with the filing my orthodontist has done. It now looks as though the corners of some of my teeth have been chipped and they also look irregular! Is there any way I can get this corrected? Should I ask my orthodontist to lengthen the teeth he’s filed that i’m unhappy with so as they can be reshaped?

I am in constant pain every minute of the day! Can you advise?

Q.

Dear Dr Hughes,

RE: Pain in LR canine for 3 years now focussing on root/socket/bone

I cannot carry on any longer with this pain. I pray that you are able to help me.
Prior to orthodontic work which started in August 2006, I never had a single second of pain or problems with my teeth. Work was cosmetic, to straighten upper centre incisors and lateral incisors. Bite was fine.
Following orthodontic work (finished Jan 2009) I have been left with almost constant pain at LR canine root/socket/bone.
Had sectional brace to upper right (healthy upper right 1st premolar removed before brace in 08.2006). Teeth /jaw area tightened with brace (2007/08) which made upper right teeth area too small to fit over teeth below, and protruding lower right canine.
I was left in agony for 2.5 years, which started towards end of brace treatment, with a malocclusion (traumatic occlusion). During this time the lower canine was too large for the space (toxicly obstructive) and caused radial pain along whole jaw, down into jaw below canine and up into skull near upper canine.
This included at least a year with undiagnosed rotting nerves in both right canines.. (teeth became devitalized due to trauma/contact) After being prescribed antibiotics as nerves so necrotic, finally had 2 root canals in May 2010.
Now still have almost constant pain in lower right canine, at root/socket/bone. Like infection pain, sitting on nerve..could there be a crack somewhere where bacteria has got in? After 3 years of LR canine being forced, moved and filed (orthodontics and then severe occlusion), its not rocket science that tooth/socket/bone is traumatized and bacteria got in (I could hear bone/tendons straining and cracking a lot during this time).
Went back to endodontist, he said âroot canal is okây and referred me to Maxillo-facial consultant with suspected neuralgia. MFU consultant said itâs probably not neurological and couldnât see any cracks (NHS standard x-ray..). Suggested splint.. I know this wonât help. Moving and straining the teeth around again will not help. Bite is now good and teeth have been moved enough. That would be like putting a plaster on a thorn. All the radial pain stopped when the canine was finally in a less obstructive position and had been filed so it was slimmer (i.e. less depth). (Both right canines and roots are larger than left ones).
I cannot live like this.
I have been left in poverty through not working for 4.5 years due to this and about to lose my home.
Am speaking much better, bite much better but have the pain. LR canine was shaved a lot (and other right side teeth) to try to make it fit in the space and not contact UR canine. Anti-inflammatory painkillers help a bit but make me sleepy. Worried about internal damage after having to take painkillers for so long.
Can sleep, eat but have this pain 90% of the time. No other tooth/root/socket/bone hurts like that when pressed (pain still there of course when not pressed). Pain can be as if there is still a nerve in the tooth (I know it has been removed) but I understand that nerve pain in connective tissue can be indistinguishable from pain which feels like it is coming from the tooth..
I have been sent from one person to the next and back round again for 3 years. I have been left trapped in the system. The simple fact is that something has happened in LR canine root/socket/bone/tissue.
I also need a hygienist as although I try to keep everything clean and floss, there is build up of plaque which must be affecting my gums and oral health..
I need an x-ray/ultrasound which will pick up any cracks/inflammation/infection/whatever is going on/ in tooth root/socket/bone..
I have had advice from an top expert that normal x-rays cant always pick up cracks/problems in teeth/cavities/tissues/bone.
I cant take any more pain and being misdiagnosed and passed on and on. I am desperate for someone to sort this out and free me of pain so I can get on with my life. Imagine living with an intolerable thorn in your jaw for 3 years.
Before all of this, I never even looked at that canine or felt it for a second..
My question to you:
Please can you urgently recommend the correct professional in London or South East, preferably Surrey/Sussex for someone to actually diagnose this correctly and operate/sort it out before I get suicidal.
Could this be a vertical apical root fracture plus bony destruction needing hemisection?..
Thank you.

My new bridge doesnt match my other teeth again. What is your advice?

Monday, May 9th, 2011
Q.

Hi. I had an old NHS 3unit bridge that was done very poorly and didn’t match in proportion with my other teeth. I recently had this unit replaced by a private cosmetic dentist and she promised that she would have the teeth match and be in proportion. I went to have to bridge fitted and the bridge looks like the one before, however as I was completely numb I couldn’t talk, and she was running late and rushing, she fitted it and I promptly left. I rang the next day to see if something could be done and I think she may ‘shave’ one of the teeth down. Do you know were I may stand in getting the bridge redone as i’m not happy with it and I feel she hasn’t kept her promise? I paid £2000 and could never afford this again I saved for a very long time just to have it fitted again. Thankyou.

I want my teeth straightening.

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011
Q.

Dr Hughes

Is it possible to have my teeth straightened through what I think maybe gum disease.
Some have become loose and I had extensive work done when younger to straighten them, but they are out of alignment on the left side and two of my teeth on the bottom have fallen backwards
My gums bleed when brushing and I seem to be producing excessive saliva and it is all very uncomfortable and looks awful
Can you please advise?
I understand there is a procedure where the gums are actually lifted, the gums treated and teeth are put right whilst the gums are lifted – is there such a procedure available?

My teeth are overcrowded due to bad dental work. What should I do?

Friday, February 18th, 2011
Q.

Hi Mark,
I am 32 years old andthe dentist I used when I was 13 took the wrong teeth out, I did query this but was advised that when my wisdom teeth grew they would push my bottom teeth forward, this was incorrect.
I now have overcrowded top teeth where a tooth on witherside overlaps my front two teeth and have gaps at the bottom of my mouth, i estimate that a pound coin would easily fit in the gap.
To add to that my bottom teeth front teeth are discolouring with dark brown appearing at the root area.
I have been scared off of dentists for fear of further errors. please can you help ?
Many Thanks
Sarah
