I had an apicectomy done in February of last year. My mouth is still swollen and numb. How long does it take before the swelling actually goes away? My lip always feels like I have a fat lip. Some days are worse than others, it effects my speech. If it stays inflamed is there something over the counter I can take to help with the swelling? It still hurts on most days, I can’t eat on that side at all. I had this surgery in February 2015.
Hi Dr Patel. I have three crowns on my front teeth. I am 47 and have had them for about 20 years! I had a crown re-stuck the other day by my dentist and I now have a gap between my front teeth. I never had a gap naturally or when original crowns fitted.
I returned to dentist who said he could not get the crown out and he’d have to “cut it” out. Is this correct? Anyway he took an X-ray and said I still had two “rumbling” infections above my two front right crowns. I had an apicoectomy a long time ago now and I don’t want to repeat the experience.
He said my only options are to fill the gap by adding some sort of material to my left front natural tooth to close the gap, but he said it would angle out from the top which sounds awful! Could you tell me how I can fix this? Thank you for your time.
Hello Dr Moore. I would like clarification on a dental issue I have. I have had problems with my top front tooth for nearly 30 years. I damaged it in my teens and had a root canal performed then. I have subsequently had an apicoectomy twice and repeated root canals from a specialist. I also have a reoccurring cyst in the gum above it. I experience no pain and the tooth is strong. Should I have it replaced now or wait? My current dentist says I should wait as the tooth is strong and I have no pain. He has advised me that it is damaging the bone but over a series of X-rays he feels this is not significant. What should I do? Thank you for your time.
Hello Dr Moore. I have a question I hope you can help me with. What material is used to fill the area that is extracted in an apicoectomy? This is after I’ve had two operations to remove cysts and I also have an amalgam packing from 1977 and 1985 in the same area. This amalgam is now fragmenting and needs to be removed. What is involved in doing this and how successful will the operation be? What is the cost of this and can it be done at a dentist surgery or hospital? I need help understand the procedure. Hello Dr Hughes. I had an attempted apicoectomy last week. He cut a lot of my gum to expose tooth number 19. Because of an infection the Dr felt he did not want to take any more bone away and I should go the implant route. He closed me up. My gums along the tooth and teeth 20 21 22 are very exposed and sore. I feel as if the roots are partially exposed like I had significant recession. Will this gum grow back and what should I do if it doesn’t? I am in quite a bit of pain at the moment. Could you help me and tell me what I should do. Thank you.
22 years ago I had a bridge on on top front teeth; 3 years later i had some problems which meant surgery over the top of the bridge – apersectomy? Very quickly there was some gum recesssion, which has got worse over the last few years – the metal from the bridge was exposed. A composite has now been appiled – slightly better but I remain self conscious. I have lived with a sinus tract over the area since 1989 – my NHS dentist helps me by ” leaving alone” – I get by with occassional discomfort. Because the area is ” weak” can anything be done? I am due for 3 surgeries next week here in Nigeria, i would be having an apicectomy on my front tooth, cavity filling(herculite), and a buildup over a root canal i had done before, am really scared about the injections i would be given on my gums as the procedures are on 3 different ends of my mouth, i have talked to my dentist about alternative pain medication, but he insists i have to get the shots, please help with information…. thanks
I’ve had two RCTs from the same endodontist and in both cases, the pain remained. X-rays are fine. second opinion agreed. He will not redo the RCTs, only extract. I saw on the X-ray that sealand had leaked. Would that cause inflammation? Would an apicoectomy help? I face losing two teeth. also, is tooth ache after three days normal post-op (after two relatively pain free days?)

I have recently undergone an apiceptomy, however I am growing concerned because it has now been two weeks since the procedure and my gum where the apiceptomy was performed is very swollen and sore. Is this normal? if so how long is it before the swelling disappears.
