Stains on my filling causing discoloring

Q. Hello. I am 27 years old and have had fillings placed on many of my front teeth. My specific question is about teeth numbers 8 and 9. I feel the feelings are old (5 years) and they have small discolorations. I don’t mind the discolorations, but I don’t trust them. They don’t look bad until I shine a light on them and it’s like the stains get five times bigger and glow. I’ve asked my dentist and he tells me they are just stains. If they are stains I don’t care, but all my cavities have started with discolorations. I had a cleaning recently and the hygenist didn’t mention these at all, even when I asked she just said she didn’t know. The one actaully has a very small brown groove I can catch my fingernail in. Should I get a second opinion? Also, on the one tooth, from what I can tell, the “stain” is surrounding the edge of the filling. I would hope that my dentist would understand my worry concerning cavities on these teeth, but I don’t know if he actually cares. And if you could, can you tell me if a previous composite resin has to be completely removed for a new one to be placed?

A. It sounds like the fillings just need resurfacing, as these fillings always pick up some stain during their life. Maybe ask him to resurface them at your next visit
