Should I Have A Temporary Tooth Until My Implant Or Just Leave The Gap?

Q.
Hi I have had an upper right 4 removed and am looking at having an implant (when I have saved up enough)
In the meantime what is the best temporary option?
a partial upper
a maryland bridge
or just leaving the gap?
Also with regards to implants how can i be sure i’m going to the right place, my dentist is reluctant to suggest anywhere and various friends have suggested places from Brighton to Budapest ….
Hope you can help – thanks
A.
Thank you for your questions. These are very good questions indeed.

Without a face to face examination it’s difficult to advise you accurately but the best way to answer your questions starts with another question:

How good do you want the treatment to be in terms of the quality of the surgery, the fit of the implant crown and the excellence of the aesthetics (how natural the new tooth will look)?

Like everything in life, there are various levels of quality. If you are looking for the very best result possible that will have the highest chances of success and look fabulous then choose an implant dentist who has a vast level of experience and can show you fantastics results they have achieved in similar cases such as your own. I always advise people to go for at least 2 consults once they have done some careful research and spoken to the dentists support team on the phone.

Be very wary of choosing on price alone. A practice that offers ‘free’ consultations is not always the best place to go. Very experienced and highly regarded dentists charge appropriate fees for their time , advice and expertise.

Regarding travel abroad you need to ask your self can you guarantee the quality, the qualifications and the result. What happpens if you have complications. Do you really want to fly in for surgery annd fly back to the UK? Implants should be carefully planned and not rushed in my opinion. Implants can fail and get infected and the success can be very much dependant on the skill and care taken during the surgery. We do not advise patients to fly for up to a week following surgery.

In the UK we have specialist registers and you could consider a dentist with specialist level qualifications as they will have much more advanced training.

The best temporary is sometime a removable denture for conveninece but in my own practice we like to use Marlyland or Bonded temporary bridges. In some cases the implant can be immediately loaded with a temporary on the implant but you’ll need to see if your case and your bite are suitable for this.

I hope that helps?
