my teeth are grey and i need a crown replacement

Q. I have a long standing now >20yrs old porcelain/metal crown, which has a minor fracture, leaving me with a sensitive front tooth, now temporarily sealed by my dentist. My teeth are in excellent condition, but have always been grey in colour (mother taking antibiotics during her pregnancy). I am female, now 36 and keen to get a replacment crown, hopefully technology has advanced now and I can finally get a really good matching crown and enjoy smiling properly. I have been advised that bleaching probably wouldn’t work on my teeth, so I think a crown is my only option..and I’d rather replace the one and not need to add crowns to more teeth for consistency. Can you advise me please, estimating the cost (very roughly range from – to if possible) Thankyou

A. Some antibiotics such a tetracyclin do cause a grey discolouration of the enamel. And grey shades do respond less to tooth whitening. They do have some response and I wouldnt rule it out in principle. cost £300-500 aim to freshen up the basic colour.

A popular choices for a single Crown on a front tooth are all ceramic crowns. The technology has changed, the metal is replaced by high strength core , differrent systems use various types the differences are subtle there are all good. If the desired shade is fairly dark & the tooth stump colour needs masking, something like “lava” is a good system. Alternatives such as “InCeram” & “Procera” are also big brand names in the market. cost £450-600. (£100- 150 more than the cost of pocelain/metal )

A no fee clinical assesment is available at the practice.
