My Son Grinds His Teeth, And His Dentist Has Recommended Veneers. Is This The Only Suitable Treatment?

Q.
Hi, my son of 20 years grinds his teeth a lot. He visited the dentist last week and she has said he needs veneers on his four front teeth as their particularly small. I am quite worried as he seems so young. Is there something else they can do? It seems she did not really consult him with any other option. I am also concerned because it seems from reading about them that they do not last too long. Can his teeth not be crowned? Please help.

Hi! It is difficult to comment directly on your sons case without seeing him, however options to consider or discuss with your dentist are direct bonding with composite fillings and splint therapy to stop the problem getting worse. Veneers are an excellent option for building up worn or broken teeth but are not suitable in all circumstances. Also, when compared to crowns, which require a significant amount of tooth preparation (removal) Veneers are significantly more conservative. Either way, it is important that your dentist addresses the cause of the grinding at the same time as repairing the teeth.
