My Dentures Make Me Gag, Should I Get Implants, Or Bridges? Also Is There Any Other Treatment I Can Consider?

Q.
I currently wear a denture which constantly makes me gag and feel sick. I have two large teeth missing at the front of my mouth and a small one to the right hand side of my mouth. I was thinking of dental implants but know this would be extremely expensive and was wondering if a bridge including all teeth would be possible? I have a tooth in the middle and to the right and left of the spaces and was wondering also if these have to be porcelain as I already have a stained porcelain crown and don’t want another.
I would be grateful for your advice.
Many thanks.

Hello and thank you for getting in touch. Gagging with dentures is a common problem and there are a number of simple solutions that may be appropriate. The denture could be made smaller or in a horse shoe shape to minimise the coverage in the palate. The further back a denture extends, the more likely it is to cause gagging. If this doesn’t help, then certainly bridges may be suitable but this would depend entirely on the quality and position of the anchor teeth. If these teeth have never been filled, then preparing them to support a bridge could be very destructive and be more detrimental in the long term.
I would always suggest booking a quick appointment with your dentist to discuss your options. I am sure they would be only too happy to guide you through the various options and the pros and cons for each. I really hope this helps. Best wishes, Marcus Gambroudes.
