My Dentist Said He Can’t Do Anything About My Periodontal Disease, Is This True?

Q.
Hi,

I was subject to bad periodontal disease caused by smoking (I think). The bleeding went on for a long period of time before I had it seen to but by then it was far too late, the damage was done. I have the disease under control now through regular cleaning but I have lost a lot of bone apparently and gum recession of around point 4. The gaps are quite noticeable but my dentist keeps saying there is nothing that can be done. Is this true? I thought he would have been a bit more helpful! I’m looking for some sort of restorative treatment in order for my old smile to come back, I used to have such a nice smile. I just don’t believe that NOTHING can be done. Surely there is something? Can you please offer me some advice? Thank you for taking your time to read this.

Hi, thanks for your questions. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to close the gaps when the gums have receded as it can make cleaning more difficult with the risk of making the gum problem worse, if you’re not sure maybe seek out a local cosmetic dentist for a 2nd opinion. I hope this helps, regards, Andrew.
