My Daughter’s Teeth Are Growing In Crooked And I’m Worried That She Will Be Teased. Is There Anything You Can Do?

Q.
My daughter is nearly 8 and I have noticed that her two top front teeth (they are her second teeth) are growing at strange angles and behind her two bottom teeth is another tooth growing behind. I’m really worried, at our last check up a few months ago the dentist told me not to worry but to be honest I can’t help but worry, although things can be done when she is older. I don’t want her or any of her friends to notice anything because she already suffers from being far too shy or too different. Could you suggest anything?
A.
Hello and thank you for getting in touch. Yours is a very common scenario and I agree totally with your dentist. Very often as children develop, teeth can come through in all sorts of positions and at all sorts of angles. As I always explain to my patients, the important thing is that the teeth are present as the positions can be addressed at a later date.

As your daughter is only 8, she will be in what we call the ‘mixed dentition’, with a mixture of baby teeth and her new adult teeth. It is not really practically possible to start straightening teeth at this stage and we would normally wait until all the baby teeth have gone, which is is normally between age 11-13 years old. Girls tend to develop a little quicker than boys.

So to reassure you, your daughters situation is a very common one and really nothing to worry about. Your dentist will monitor her development over the next few years and if necessary will refer her to see an orthodontist when the time is right. I hope this is helpful.
