My Daughter’s Teeth Are Discoloured, Could You Advise Me On Whitening Options?

Q.
Hi, My daughter is 14 years old and since her adult teeth came through they have flaws in them and lighter patches, particularly the front teeth both top and bottom. We have been told by our local dentist that this could be due to how she was developing in the womb. She is a Type 1 diabetic. As with other people who have written on this site it does affect her confidence and tries not to smile showing her teeth, as a developing young woman it’s starting to upset her much more and has been the subject of adverse comments at school. I understand that teeth whitening is not available on the NHS. The flaws seem to be in her teeth rather than staining. Are there any options at her age to make her teeth whiter. Advice much appreciated.
A.
An abrasive polishing technique and aesthetic bonding may be suitable for her or some kind of veneering technique but this needs to be carefully thought out due to her young age. I would advise a visit with an experienced cosmetic dentist or paediatric dentist, who is very familiar and experienced with cosmetic dentistry procedures – none of these are likely to be offered on the NHS by the way but you can ask your local health authority or dental teaching hospital for advice or choose to invest in your child’s confidence and well being by choosing a private option

Hope that helps give you at least a starting point but a thorough examination and consultation is the next step

Best wishes

Mark.
