My Daughter’s Orthodontist Recommended That She Have Four Teeth Removed. Is This The Right Decision?

Q.
Hello Andrew. My 16 year old daughter has been referred to her orthodontist following a dental visit. She still has 5 baby teeth. X-ray has confirmed that she has adult teeth waiting to come down, all except one. The orthodontist has recommended she has the four baby teeth removed, two canines and the two either side. There is a tooth in the gum above one of the canines. To have four visible teeth extracted at this age will be so awful and we are in such a quandary as to whether or not we are making the right decision, please can you advise us. Many thanks.

Hello and thank you for getting in touch. It may seem difficult but it should only be for a short time whilst the adult teeth push through. Having baby teeth removed will help the new ones to come down. I sounds like she has an impacted tooth also. Why not get a second opinion and make an informed decision on what each dentist recommends? I hope this helps. Kind regards, Dr Andrew Moore.
