My daughter is getting bullied about her yellow teeth, what should we do?

Q.
Dear Dr Solanki

My daughter is 14 and her teeth are yellow. She has not needed a brace has always been meticulous when cleaning her teeth. She is not aware of herself as some 14 year olds are and I have noticed a significant change over the last few years. Tonight’, finally she broke down in tears and says that her teeth are awful.
Despite reassurance she tells me several children have made nasty comments at school. Where do i start? Your support would be hugely appreciated

Hi.
Some form of tooth-whitening sounds like it would be a good start. Most agree that 13 years and over is ok to whiten teeth.. If your dentist is not au fait with tooth whitening, if you ask around I’m sure you’ll find a dentist who does offer it. It’s obviously not covered on the NHS so it’s up to the individual dentist.
Costs range from approx £250 for home whitening to £450 for an in surgery whitening
I would recommend home whitening with trays made by a dentist and 10% carbamide peroxide whitening gel(from a dentist) for 4-6 hours per night for up to 4 weeks. Stronger solutions e.g 16%,22% will just make her teeth more sensitive the next day
Hope this helps
