My crowned tooth is really sensitive after being fitted recently. Will I need further treatment?

Q. I had a crown fitted over a back molar about 4 weeks ago, which had cracked after a long-term large filling. I didn’t require a root canal. The prep went fine but when the temp cover was taken off the dentist was unable to numb it and it was incredibly sensitive. Anyway, the crown was fitted and it was really sensitive to everything for a week then it subsided a bit. Now the tooth next to it is sensitive too! The crowned tooth is sensitive to very hot drinks and food but not as bad as it was and a little bit sensitive to very cold stuff too. Please tell me that I don’t require any further treatment as they couldn’t numb it last time I went and the prospect of drilling when I can feel it makes me feel ill!!! Many thanks,
A. It is quite normal for the tooth to be sensitve during the temporary phase. Once your new crown has been fitted it can take a couple of weeks to setle down, the sign that it is feeling better suggests it will probably settle down. If the tooth becomes extremely sensitive again then visit your dentist as the nerve in the tooth could be dying off.
