My crowned tooth is causing me a lot of pain, what could this be?

Q.
I was woken up on friday night, with really sharp throbbing pains in my tooth, molar, which was crowned about 6 months ago, I have been taking painkillers for 2 days but is no good, pain is still there and is strong, do you think i have an infection in my crown?what could this be? I have not had any root treatment for this tooth. I have had another crown on a different tooth, but that has not given me any problems, I havent made an dentist appointment yet should I make one? Thank you for your time doctor
A.
Please seek the advice of a dentist immediately- it sounds like you could have some inflammation in the nerve of your tooth. This is not uncommon following crowning a tooth, or even large fillings and can happen at any stage after the procedure, days , months or years later. The tooth may require a root canal procedure?

Kind regards
