Hi Dr Andrew Moore When i was young i didnt look after me teeth very well obviously since becoming an adult i understood why it was so important and have brushed me teeth twice a day and regularly use mouth wash i am a smoker and am lucky to be able to eat loads of junk and still stay at a size 8 anyway when i say junk food i dont eat lots of sweet stuff i mean take aways and things like that i dont drink much juice or fizzy drink mainly tea and fresh tropical juice but just recently i have noticed a couple of tiny black marks just at the top of my teeth just under the gum i have no idea what it is or how to get rid of it im so worried its going to get worse my biggest problem is im petrified of the dentist so i need to know what i can do from home please help many thanks

A. This is probably tartar build up under the gum. Unfortunatley you need to see a dentist or hygienist to clean it off before the gums start to shrink back or get infected. Ask around for a dentist recommended by friends perhaps one who can spend time with you to help you overcome your fear of dentists.
