Is it less painful to have a wisdom tooth extracted or root canal treatment?

Q.
Hi doctor,

My wisdom tooth has got infected. It’s on my upper left jaw. I visited a dentist today and she advised me tooth extraction to be performed in a week’s time. She also prescribed me Ammoxicillin (500mg) to be taken 3 times a day for one week. I am not sure if I should go for a root canal treatment or a tooth extraction. My exams are approaching so I want to go for a treatment which takes less time and gets me back on work asap. I would also like to know which one is a less painful procedure. I am 29, female. Please help.

Thanks,

A.
Upper wisdom teeth are usually simple to remove and much simpler than having a root filling so far back.
Recovery is also good after an upper wisdom tooth extraction and you should be able to go back to work the next day. It isdifficult to predict the long term prognosis for an upper wisdom tooth root filling as access is very difficult, so it may cause further problems.
