Is it correct to cut off the post from my root canal tooth

Q. I HAD A ROOT CANAL POST CROWN FITTED 5/6 YEARS AGO, WAS FINE UNTIL IT STARTED FALLING OUT,I GOT MY DENTIST TO FIX IT BACK IN SEVERAL TIMES UNTIL ONE DAY IT CAME OUT AND WOULD NOT GO BACK IN ALL THE WAY,BOOKED AN EMERGENCY OPPOINTMENT ON THE MONDAY MORNING AND THE DENTIST CUT THE POST OFF AND STUCK MY TOOTH IN, IT LASTED ALL OF 5 MINS,I FEEL LET DOWN BY MY DENTIST, WAS HE CORRECT TO CUT THE POST OFF?

A.

A tooth with a root canal and post takes a lot of pressure pushing the root outwards. Sometimes this causes hairline fracture that cause a complete root split. If this happens the chance of the root surviving are small. The fracture often manifests when a previously good post starts coming loose. So I’m avoiding comment about cutting down the post and recommend that you get the root carefully checked for fractures. If it is still secure then I would recommend a new post crown as the old one was probably  coming out too often.
