Is it a safe procedure to have veneers and crowns replace? and how many times can it be replaced

Q. Hi, Could you advise please, if it is a safe procedure to have veneers and crowns replaced? How many times can veneers usually be replaced before the health of the teeth/nerves is put at risk? Thank you Dr.

A. Veneers / Crown do need to be replaced it really depends on how much healthy tooth has to be removed to place your veneers and most importantly how well you look after them.

I have had 2 sets of veneers taken off my dentist and lab made mistake each time. I decided to see a dentist with the cerec machine because I thought it would be better to see the results in 3d. I find the quality and appearance are not great and i want to see a top cosmetic dentist to sort it out! My worries are that with the cerec machine they have to cut the tooth to fit there veneers and not sure if that will leave enough tooth to get them re done. Since having them put on I have had to have 2 root canals. Can you please advise me on the risks of doi g them again?

Forgot to ask….. Since having the cerec veneers I have been experiencing tenderness in my sinus area and awful jaw and neck ache, what could this be?

Hi, I am a 59 year old healthy female with no prior history of serious dental problems. I lost a molar that had cracked and abcessed. I wanted to replace it with an implant. My dentist used Alloplastic grafting material in preparation for an implant. Just one tooth – a molar. Since it was first put in my mouth 3 months ago, I have gotten more ill each and every day. Headache, nausea, throbbing in the area of the dental work, constant need to sleep or lie down. Could the material used for grafting be the cause of illness?

Very unlikely, but if concerned I would recommend you see your dentist for an examination

I am a 54 year old female and am on income support. My upper and lower back teeth are nearly all crowns and I have a bridge in the front upper section of my gums. I am told the enamel is now exrtemely thin and I have ground them all down in my sleep. Guess there is not much hope left for them – do you need anyone to practice on as I do not suppose things can get any worse for me now and I would be very grateful.

I already have a few veneers which are shabby, one of my front teeth is attached to the next little one as the metal shaft was not strong enough to hold in place, it is now falling slightly which looks terrible as my two front teeth are not level and this also gathers food at the back. My dentist says to leave alone until we have to do something then it’s dentures surely not ther must be something else, I am a national health patient is this why?

I have a veneer on one front tooth and the other has part filling and is badly discoloured. The veneer has been on a long time. I talked to my dentist about it and he suggested crown both instead of veneer because it will last longer. Do you agree with this? Its just my previous dentist had suggested veneers and never even mentioned crowns as an alternative. I do want the best cosmetic look possible.

A crown could lst longer but personally I would ty another veneer unless the tooth has deteriorated further.you my get he best match by placing a veneer on the adjacent tooth so thats worth thinking about too.

i am a 68 year old woman who because of gum disease years ago had to have most of my bottom back teeth and some on the top. I changed from my elderly dentist who had no hygenist to my present one and diference is great but now have discomfort because of thin enamel on top 6 front teeth.Dentist tells me i cant have dentures because my bite has changed.Would veneers stop discomfort? have taken dentists advice about toothpaste and what is bad to drink. As i am on a low pension i cant afford it for only cosmetic reasons.

Veneers might help to protect the enamel if they are very worn, however if you don’t have any back teeth they might come off due to the bite. It sounds like you might need complex treatment to correct your bite however this can be very expensive.

I have been to my NHS dentist today and been quoted £448 for a single porcelain molar crown with root canal treatment. Surely this is wrong as I thought the NHS charge was £209. My dentist has recently been taken over by a group and have supplied me with a written quote stating NHS charge £48 and Private Treatment £400. This is the first time I have been asked to pay this kind of money for NHS treatment Thanks for you help.

Ask him for more detail regarding the cost of the private treatment I guess its because he doesn’t do porcelain crowns on the NHS

Having recently broken a tooth, I opted for a 100% porcelain crown. The crown is much larger than my original tooth had been and not only touches the inside of my lip but also protrudes from the rest, which is quite noticeable when I smile. The temporary crown had not been any problem. Is it normal for a crown to be so unlike the natural tooth and can anything be done to correct the shape now that it is in-situ?

Maeve Says :

It sounds like it has been overcontoured by the lab, perhaps your dentist could make small adjustments to make it feel normal again?

Hi I had a porcelain bonded crown fitted yesterday -2nd lower molar from back left hand side( no wisdom teeth) as a private patient at my dentists. I expected it to feel a bit alien in my my mouth but it does not feel or look right at all. When I bite on that side it feels like a lump of rock in the way and my teeth the other side do not meet properly either when biting together. It also does not look right as the rest of my teeth are higher at the side towards my cheek and slope down so they are lower at the inside of my mouth. The crown is exactly the opposite so that it is high on the inside. Is it possible for it to have been fitted the wrong way round? Thanks for your advice 🙂

can you just buy a cap for a front tooth and what is the cost of a cap. my boyfriend has afront tooth that is decaying and he just needs to cover that tooth. what would something like that costs. he is afraid that the costs would exceed the amount he could afford. that tooth is the only problem that is causing me to not want to smile. i just want to smile again not to mention to be able to eat without worrying about the tooth chipping or breaking off.

Replacing the crowns is the only option or if the roots are poor extraction of the teeth and dental implants would work well.

I am in the middle of dental treatment. I had teeth removed due to gum disease in January and was about to have a scan before fitting implants next month. I am to have 6 upper implants and 4 lower. I have 10 of my original teeth. However I have recently been diagnosed with a heart murmur and an overactive thyroid probably Graves Disease. I also have Coeliac Disease. I am quite ill at present and the Endocronologist has said to postpone any dental work until my thyroid is more stable. I have not yet spoken to him about implants but will. I am now concerned about implant surgery and auto immune diseases. Also is it safe to have a scan with untreated thyroid. Thanks.

Makenna Says :

The scan is safe but seek advice from your Endocrinologist before starting any invasive treatment such as implants. It may be best to put this off for a while?

Hello Chris, I have somehow managed to break my implanted tooth! had an accident at work the other week wherby I fractured my cheek bone, at the same time as this I have broken a tooth and the neighboring implanted tooth. I am worried that this will pose problems. the real broken tooth will be straight forward enough but what can the worst case scenario be with regards to the implant and tooth and what should I be doing about restoration? thanks for your time.

June 13th, 2012 at 08:47 PM
Jorden Says :

You need a dentist to have a look – possibly the dentist who placed the implant, or alternatively, another implant dentist. Worst case scenario? – possibly a fractured implant that’s no longer amenable to re-resotration, in this case, the implant may need replacing.
